An existing installation of Directory Server Enterprise Edition can be patched, upgraded, or migrated to 11g Release 1 (11.1.1.5.0) depending on the installed version, as shown in Upgrade and Migration Paths:

The following sections describe the procedures for migrating and updating installations:
Installations of version 7 can be patched, as described in Chapter 2, Patching Directory Server Enterprise Edition 7 to Version 11g Release 1 (11.1.1.5.0).
Installations of version 6 can be upgraded with the current directory server software, as described in Chapter 3, Upgrading Directory Server Enterprise Edition 6 to Version 11g Release 1 (11.1.1.5.0).
Installations of version 5.2 can be migrated by replacing the directory server software, as described in Part III, Migrating Directory Server Enterprise Edition 5.2 to Version 11g Release 1 (11.1.1.5.0)
