42 Overview of the WebCenter Sites: Gadgets Application

This chapter provides an overview of the Oracle WebCenter Sites: Gadgets application. It also provides information about the roles that can be assigned to the Gadgets application's users to grant them permissions to the Gadgets application's interface functions.

This chapter contains the following sections:

42.1 Overview of the Gadgets Application Interfaces

The Gadgets application provides two interfaces: the Global Gadget Catalog interface and the Gadgets User interface. The Global Gadget Catalog interface is displayed when the Gadgets application is assigned to the site specified as the Community-Gadgets application site (AdminSite by default) during the Gadgets application's installation process. The Gadgets User interface is displayed when the Gadgets application is assigned to a site other than the site on which the Global Gadget Catalog interface is enabled.

Note:

For instructions on enabling the Global Gadget Catalog interface and the Gadgets User interface, see Chapter 40, "Enabling the Community and Gadgets Interfaces."

Figure 42-1 illustrates the functions associated with both of the Gadgets application's interfaces and identifies the roles that have permissions to those interfaces functions.

This part contains information about the interface functions specific to general and site administrators. For information about the permissions granted to users assigned the Designer role, and a detailed overview of the Gadgets User interface, see the Oracle Fusion Middleware WebCenter Sites User's Guide.

42.2 Gadgets Application Roles and Permissions

Once the Gadgets application is installed on the WEM Framework and assigned to the site specified as the Community-Gadgets application site (AdminSite by default), and at least one other CM site, general administrators can assign selected users roles to work with the application. The roles are GeneralAdmin, SiteAdmin, and Designer.

Table 42-1 provides an overview of the permissions granted to each role.

Note:

Certain permissions are shared by the roles. For example, all users of the Gadgets application are able to add default gadgets to the dashboard panel. This part contains information pertaining only to users assigned the GeneralAdmin and SiteAdmin roles. For detailed information about the permissions granted to the Designer role, see the Oracle Fusion Middleware WebCenter Sites User's Guide.

GeneralAdmin

Users assigned the GeneralAdmin role are administrators of the entire WebCenter Sites system. These users can enable and manage the Global Gadget Catalog interface. They can also enable the Gadgets User interface on sites other than the site on which the Global Gadget Catalog interface is enabled. These users manage the global catalog, which is contained in the Global Gadget Catalog interface.

SiteAdmin

Users assigned the SiteAdmin role are administrators of their assigned content management sites and its applications, including the Gadgets application. These users have permissions to all Gadgets User interface functions. However, their main purpose is to manage the CM site's gadgets in the site gadget catalog.

Designer

Users assigned the Designer role can manage the appearance of the default dashboard, deploy the dashboard tag and single gadget tags on web pages, and configure and deploy the Login Bar widget tag. These users also have permissions to specify the language in which deployed gadgets and the dashboard are displayed, specify a domain on which the gadgets and dashboard tags can be deployed, and configure the appearance settings of the Gadgets User interface, the dashboard tag, and the single gadget tags. For more information about the permissions granted to the Designer role, see the Oracle Fusion Middleware WebCenter Sites User's Guide.

42.3 Making Gadgets Available for Deployment

Users can deploy gadgets only when the gadgets are registered to a site gadget catalog or shared to a site gadget catalog from the global catalog. If you are a general administrator, you can either register gadgets to the global catalog or a site gadget catalog. If you are a site administrator, you will register gadgets directly to the site gadget catalog.

Note:

The catalogs are provided in the Gadgets application's interfaces – the Global Gadget Catalog interface and the Gadgets User interface (as shown in Figure 42-1).
  • The global catalog is accessible from the Global Gadget Catalog interface and is used by general administrators to distribute gadgets to as many site gadget catalogs as necessary. Which in turn makes the gadgets available for single gadget and dashboard deployment. When a gadget is registered to the global catalog, general administrators can share the gadget to multiple site gadget catalogs, without registering the gadget separately on each desired site gadget catalog.

  • Site gadget catalogs are part of the Gadgets User interface. They are local and specific to each site on which the Gadgets User interface is enabled. The Gadgets User interface also provides a dashboard and screens for single gadget deployment, which are dynamically associated with the site gadget catalog. When a general or site administrator registers a gadget to a site gadget catalog, that gadget is made available on the dashboard (as a thumbnail, on the gadget selection panel) and for individual deployment.

    Note:

For more information about single gadget deployment and the dashboard, see the Oracle Fusion Middleware WebCenter Sites User's Guide.

Figure 42-2 summarizes the process of how administrators make gadgets available for single gadget and dashboard deployment. Gadgets can be registered to the site gadget catalog either directly (from the User interface) or shared from the global catalog (in the Global Gadget Catalog interface).
