Installing and Configuring the Siebel Gateway Name Server

This section provides instructions for installing and starting the Siebel Gateway Name Server as part of standard Siebel Enterprise Server deployment.

NOTE:  The installation should be conducted by a nonroot user for simpler administration and maintenance. However, root access is required if you plan to configure the Siebel Gateway Name Server or Siebel Server for autostart.

To avoid DVD swapping, copy all installation files, including the required language files, to a common installation directory within your system or use the Network Image Creator. For details, see Selecting Your Media for Installation. If you elect not to install directly from DVD, you will not see some of the prompts regarding swapping the DVD in the following procedure.

If you are using X-connectivity software to access a UNIX machine from a Windows machine, you might experience unexpected exiting or hanging by the installer. If this is the case, try using a later version of the X-connectivity software. For Exceed, for example, use version 8.0 or greater. For proper Java GUI display on your local machine, set XTerm display values, using the command setenv DISPLAY xxx.xxx.xxx:0.0 or setenv DISPLAY hostname:0.0. If you observe poor performance or unexpected behavior using an emulator, telnet to the UNIX server and use console mode to perform installation. For details on installing in console mode, see Console Mode Installation and Configuration.

The Siebel Enterprise Server Installer verifies not only that you have the required software for installation of Siebel version you are installing, but that the software is at the version level necessary.

NOTE:  The following procedure is for installing the base product. For patch installation instructions, refer to the Maintenance Release Guide provided with the patch.

To install the Siebel Gateway Name Server

  1. If you are installing from DVD, insert the appropriate DVD for the Siebel applications into the DVD drive for the chosen server, and mount this DVD:
    • Siebel eBusiness Applications, Base Applications for UNIX_OS
    • Siebel Industry Applications, Base Applications for UNIX_OS

      where:

UNIX_OS = Your UNIX operating system, such as AIX, HP-UX, or Solaris

NOTE:  The volume label for the DVD is seaUNIX_OSunibase (for Siebel eBusiness Applications) or siaUNIX_OSunibase (for Siebel Industry Applications), where UNIX_OS is aix, hpux, or sol.

As a convenience, you may also want to mount the seaalllanglep (for Siebel eBusiness Applications) or siaalllanglep (for Siebel Industry Applications) DVD, where lang is the code for the language you are installing, on a different DVD drive for the same machine.

  2. Log on to the server, using the Siebel service owner account that you recorded in the copy you made earlier of Deployment Planning Worksheet.

CAUTION:  If the Siebel Gateway Name Server is installed by root, then only root can stop and start the server. Use a Siebel account that has the correct authorizations to install. For more information on creating Siebel accounts, see Creating the Siebel Service Owner Account.

  3. Open a new shell and navigate to the root directory of the DVD or to the appropriate network directory, if you are installing from a network image.
  4. Navigate to UNIX_OS/Server/Siebel_Enterprise_Server, where UNIX_OS is your UNIX operating system, such as AIX, Solaris, or HPUX (for HP-UX).
  5. Unset any Siebel-specific environment variables. To view current environment variable settings, enter env in the shell window.
  6. To start the Siebel Gateway Name Server installation process, enter the following command, appending any desired flag described in Additional Flags for Installation Commands.

    ./setupUNIX_OS

    where:

UNIX_OS = Your UNIX operating system, such as sol, hp, or aix

    The Installer Welcome screen appears.

  7. Click Next.

If you have installed other Siebel components on the same machine, the installer displays the message that an existing installation has been found. In such a case, proceed to Step 8; otherwise, click Next and proceed to Step 9.

  8. Depending on whether you want to install a new instance of Siebel software or add a new language to an existing instance, take the appropriate action.
  9. Enter the fully qualified path to the installation directory that you recorded in a copy of Deployment Planning Worksheet or click Browse to choose a different directory.

NOTE:  The directory name should be standard alphanumeric characters, including the underscore. No other characters or spaces are allowed.

  10. Click Next.

The Installer Product Selection screen appears.

  11. Select the Gateway Name Server and click Next.

Other components can be installed later. If you choose to install additional products at the same time as the Siebel Gateway Name Server, it is not necessary to enter some of the same information, such as language choice, twice. For this reason, the installation steps described in Installing the Siebel Server will not appear in the exact order as described.

NOTE:  If you select more than one licensed component at once, the Siebel Enterprise Server (SES) Installer and the Siebel Software Configuration Wizard prompt you for the installation parameters of each component individually and in the sequence required. You should verify that you have all of the preconfiguration steps completed before you begin, or the install may fail.

  12. Choose the type of installation to perform from the following options; then click Next to continue.

NOTE:  For the Siebel Gateway Name Server, all three options install the same components.

    • Typical. Installs all Siebel Gateway components.
    • Compact. Installs only those components necessary to run the Siebel Gateway, but no additional components or help.
    • Custom. Lets you customize your installation by choosing the specific components you want to install.

The Install Selected Language Packs screen appears.

  13. Choose the language or languages to be installed and click Next.

Servers are installed, at a minimum, with the primary (base) language in which the server will be run. This is the primary (base) language for your Enterprise Server. Optionally, you can install one or more additional languages.

When installing languages at a later date, you must also reinstall any patches installed on the directory.

NOTE:  In a Unicode-enabled database environment, you can install any of the available Siebel Language Packs. In a non-Unicode database environment, you must consider the correlation of the Language Packs you want to install and the characters supported by your database code page. For example, in a Western European code page database, you can only install Western European Language Packs, such as English, French, Spanish, or German Language Packs. In a Japanese code page database, you can only install Japanese or English Language Packs.

For a list of supported code pages and encoding strategies, see System Requirements and Supported Platforms on Siebel SupportWeb.

    The Installer Verification screen appears.

  14. Click Next to copy the files for the selected product into the installation location.

    The Installer Progress screen appears.

The installer proceeds to install the specified files. After the files have been copied to the installation location, this message appears:

Setup did not find the lang language pack on the current media. Please insert the DVD containing the lang language pack and select the setupUNIX_OS file from the lang folder.

    where:

lang = The code for the language you are installing, such as enu for U.S. English.

UNIX_OS = Your UNIX operating system, such as aix, hp, or sol.

NOTE:  For Siebel Industry Applications, the Windows and UNIX Language Packs are on different DVDs.

  15. Remove the current DVD from the drive and insert the appropriate Language Pack DVD.

A message box appears, titled Navigate to the Executable on the lang Language Pack DVD, and displays a file called siebel.ini. However, you do not need to do anything with this file.

Clear the filter dialog box, if needed, to be sure that you can see the appropriate files.

  16. Open setupUNIX_OS under UNIX_OS/Server/Siebel_Enterprise_Server/lang directory.

    where:

UNIX_OS (for the command) = Your UNIX operating system, such as aix, solaris, or hp

UNIX_OS (for the directory path) = Your UNIX operating system, such as AIX, Solaris, or HPUX (for HP-UX)

lang = The language code for the language you are installing, such as enu for U.S. English

A message appears, stating that language files are being installed.

When installation of all the language files has been completed, the installer prompts you again for the base DVD:

Please re-insert the base DVD and browse to the setupUNIX_OS file to enable setup to continue.

  17. Navigate again to the base DVD mount point on the network, locate Siebel_Enterprise_Server/setupUNIX_OS, and click OK.

The Installer Progress screen appears and displays the progress of the installation followed by additional configuration screens.

Which screen appears next depends on whether you are installing one or multiple languages.

    • If you are installing more than one language, the Primary Language screen appears. Proceed to Step 18.
    • If you are installing only one language, the Gateway Port screen appears. Proceed to Step 19.
  18. Select the primary (base) language and click Next.

NOTE:  This is the primary (base) language for your enterprise—the language in which you want your Siebel Server to run and which you normally want to read messages.

    The Port Number screen appears.

  19. Accept the default Gateway Port Number or change it and click Next.

NOTE:  You may select any port number (lower than 32767) that is free and you are not planning to use for any other process. However, if a firewall is configured between your Web clients and your Siebel Gateway Name Server, you must first open your chosen port on the firewall.

    The Installer Autostart screen appears.

  20. Choose whether the Siebel Gateway Name Server should autostart on restart, or not, and then click Next.

If you will be clustering this Siebel Gateway Name Server, do not configure it for automatic start; otherwise, select automatic start. The automatic start setting programs the Siebel Gateway Name Server to accept additional configuration instructions to start automatically each time the host machine restarts. To actually implement automatic start-up, you must also complete the configuration steps described in Configuring the Siebel Gateway for Automatic Start.

The Installer Configuration Verification screen appears.

  21. Verify the Siebel Gateway Name Server settings and click Next to accept, or Back to go back and change a setting.

CAUTION:  Your installation process may vary from the procedure provided in this section depending on what components you have selected to install. For example, you may have elected to install the Siebel Gateway Name Server and the Siebel Server at the same time. In this instance, the installer will skip from this point in the Siebel Gateway Name Server installation to Step 2 (in Installing the Siebel Server).

    The Finish screen appears.

  22. To complete the installation, click Finish.

To verify the installation

  1. Navigate to the $SIEBEL_ROOT/gtwysrvr/bin.
  2. Using an editor like vi, open the base.txt file. It lists the type of installation just completed, for example:
