Installing and Configuring the Siebel Server

This topic explains how to run the installation wizard for installing and configuring the Siebel Server.

There are several prerequisites for launching the installation wizard:

In most cases, the installation should be performed by a nonroot user for simpler administration and maintenance. However, root access is required if you plan to configure the Siebel Gateway Name Server or Siebel Server for auto-start.To avoid DVD swapping, copy all installation files, including the required language files, to a common installation directory within your system or use the Network Image Creator. For more information, see Selecting Your Media for Installation. If you elect to do so, note that you may not get some of the prompts regarding swapping the DVD in the following procedure.

NOTE:  In a Unicode-enabled database environment, you can install any available Siebel Language Pack. In a non-Unicode database environment, you must consider the correlation of the Language Packs you want to install and the characters supported by your database code page. For example, in a Western European code page database, you can install only Western European Language Packs, such as for English, French, Spanish, or German. In a Japanese code page database, you can install only Japanese or English Language Packs.

If you are using X-connectivity software to access a UNIX machine from a Windows machine, you might experience unexpected exiting or hanging by the installer. If this is the case, try using a later version of the X-connectivity software. For Exceed, for example, use Exceed 8.0 or greater. For proper Java GUI displays on your local machine, set XTerm display values, using the command setenv DISPLAY xxx.xxx.xxx:0.0 or setenv DISPLAY hostname:0.0. If you observe poor performance or unexpected behavior using an emulator, telnet to the UNIX server and use console mode to perform installation. For details on installing in console mode, see Console Mode Installation and Configuration.

NOTE:  The following procedure is for installing the base product. For patch installation instructions, refer to the Maintenance Release Guide provided with the patch.

To install and configure a Siebel Server

  1. Stop all Siebel Server processes except the one for Siebel Gateway Name Server.
  2. (AIX only) Verify that the login ID performing installation has permission to run slibclean by asking the administrator to change the permission as follows:

    chmod 6555 /usr/sbin/slibclean

  3. If you are installing from DVD, insert the appropriate DVD for the Siebel applications into the DVD drive of the chosen server, and mount this DVD:
    • Siebel eBusiness Applications, Base Applications for UNIX_OS
    • Siebel Industry Applications, Base Applications for UNIX_OS

      where:

UNIX_OS = Your UNIX operating system, such as AIX, HP-UX, or Solaris

NOTE:  The volume label for the DVD is seaUNIX_OSunibase (for Siebel eBusiness Applications) or siaUNIX_OSunibase (for Siebel Industry Applications), where UNIX_OS is aix, hpux, or sol.

As a convenience, you may also want to mount the seaalllanglep (for Siebel eBusiness Applications) or siaalllanglep (for Siebel Industry Applications) DVD, where lang is the code for the language you are installing, on a different DVD drive for the same machine.

  4. Log on to the server, using the Siebel user account that you recorded in the copy you made earlier of Deployment Planning Worksheet.

If a Siebel Server is installed by root, then only root can stop and start the server. Use a Siebel account other than root that has the correct authorizations to install. For more information on creating Siebel accounts, see Creating the Siebel Service Owner Account.

  5. Open a new shell and navigate to the root directory of the DVD or to the appropriate network directory, if you are installing from a network image.
  6. Navigate to the UNIX_OS/Server/Siebel_Enterprise_Server directory, where UNIX_OS is your UNIX operating system, such as AIX, Solaris, or HPUX (for HP-UX).
  7. Unset any Siebel-specific environment variables. To view current environment variable settings, enter set (Korn shell) or env (C shell) in the shell window.
  8. Verify the directories and permissions to those directories into which you will install the product. You must have write and execute permission.
  9. To start the Siebel Server installation process, enter the following command, appending any valid flag to it, as described in Additional Flags for Installation Commands.

    ./setupUNIX_OS

    where:

UNIX_OS = Your UNIX operating system, such as sol (Solaris), hp (HP-UX), or aix (AIX)

    The Installer Welcome screen appears.

  10. Click Next.
  11. Depending on whether you are installing your Siebel Server files for the first time or adding a new language to an existing instance, take the appropriate action, and then click Next:
    • To install the server software in a new instance, or to install the Siebel Server in the same location where you previously installed Siebel Gateway Name Server, select None as the default and click Next. Proceed to Step 12.
    • To install a new language in an existing instance, select the displayed instance and click Next. Proceed to Step 16.

See also Guidelines for Installing Multiple Language Packs on the Siebel Server for important additional information on this topic.

      The Installer Path screen appears.

  12. Enter the fully qualified path to the installation directory and click Next or choose a different directory by taking the following steps:
    1. Click Browse and navigate to the installation directory.
    2. Record the fully qualified location that you recorded in Deployment Planning Worksheet.

The directory name should be standard alphanumeric characters, including the underscore. No other characters or spaces are allowed.

  13. Click Next.

The Installer Product Selection screen appears.

  14. Choose the server products you want to install, and for which you are licensed, and click Next.

If you install all licensed components at once, the Siebel Enterprise Server Installer and the Siebel Software Configuration Wizard prompts you later for the installation parameters of each component individually and in the sequence required.

    The Setup Type screen appears.

  15. Choose the type of installation to perform from the following options and click Next to continue:
    • Typical. Installs all Siebel Server components.
    • Compact. Installs only those components necessary to run the Siebel Gateway, but no additional components or help. This selection is not supported for the Siebel Server.
    • Custom. Lets you customize your installation by choosing the specific components you want to install.

The Custom option allows you to clear any specific server components (listed as follows) that you do not want to install:

      • Siebel Server Executables
      • Siebel Server Core Components
      • Siebel Server Remote Components
      • Siebel Server Object Manager
      • Siebel Field Service Components
