About Communications Drivers and Profiles
This section provides background information about communications drivers and profiles and the roles they play in supporting Siebel Communications Server.
Siebel Communications Server provides several types of communications drivers:
- Communications driver that supports interactive voice communications (CTI, or computer telephony integration), for Intel NetMerge (formerly Dialogic) products, included in Siebel CTI Connect. See Using Siebel CTI Connect.
- Communications drivers that support wireless messaging using certain protocols—for example, outbound WAP Push, or inbound or outbound SMS (Short Message Service). SMS messaging requires Siebel Wireless Messaging. See Using Wireless Messaging.
- Communications driver that supports inbound and outbound communications for email servers and fax gateways using SMTP/POP3 protocols. See Using Email, Fax, and Other Systems.
- Communications driver that supports interactive communications capabilities for the email channel, using the communications toolbar. See Using Email, Fax, and Other Systems.
- Communications driver that provides a heartbeat capability to help maintain the push connection. See Using Push Keep Alive Driver for Session Connections.
- Communications drivers that support other outbound communications protocols—for example, FTP. See Using Email, Fax, and Other Systems.
In order to work with communications systems that are not supported by the drivers provided by Siebel Systems, customers or other vendors can create and support custom communications drivers using the Adaptive Communications API.
Or, to support additional or different driver parameters and functionality, you can write a driver to extend one of the Siebel-provided communications drivers.
For more information, see Non-Supported Communications Systems. See also Developing a Communications Driver.
NOTE: For information about upgrade issues that relate to communications drivers used in version 6.x, see Upgrading from Version 6.x.
