3 Administering Scan for Adrenaline

This section contains the following topics:

3.1 Adding a Scan Profile

Follow these steps to add a Scan for Adrenaline profile.

  1. In the Oracle Document Capture screen, click the Manage Scan Profiles button on the toolbar.

  2. In the Manage Scan Profiles screen, click the New button. A new profile is displayed in the side pane.

  3. In the Profile Name field, enter a name for the scan profile.

  4. Specify how batches will be automatically named as they are created. (Skip this step if you want users to name batches.)

    1. In the Batch Prefix field, type a prefix (up to eight characters) to be assigned to batches.

    2. Select the Auto Sequence field.

  5. In the File Cabinet field, select the file cabinet to which you want batches assigned.

  6. In the Task Description field, enter instructions for the user scanning with this profile.

  7. Select the Scanner tab. Select a scanner or disk source. See "Selecting a Scanner" or "Importing Images".

  8. In the File Type field, specify how you want scanned images stored in Capture.

  9. Click the Image Processing tab and select settings (optional). Use the options on this tab to enhance scanned images. See "Selecting Image Processing Settings".

  10. Click the Save button.

  11. Test the scan profile's settings. See "Testing Scan Profiles as a User".

3.2 Deleting a Scan Profile

Follow these steps to remove a scan profile no longer in use. Deleting a scan profile does not affect batches previously scanned using the profile.

  1. In the Oracle Document Capture screen, click the Manage Scan Profiles button on the toolbar.

  2. From the side pane of the Manage Scan Profiles screen, select a profile to delete.

  3. Click the Delete button, then confirm the deletion.

3.3 Copying a Scan Profile

Follow these steps to make a copy of a scan profile. This is useful for making variations to a scan profile while retaining the original.

  1. In the Oracle Document Capture screen, click the Manage Scan Profiles button on the toolbar.

  2. In the side pane of the Manage Scan Profiles screen, select the scan profile you want to copy.

  3. Click the Copy button. A duplicate of the profile is added to the side pane.

  4. Select settings and save the profile.

3.4 Selecting a Scanner

Follow these steps to select a scanner and adjust its default settings.

  1. Using the Kofax Source Manager (KSM), define a scanner source. Use the KSM (32-bit) icon in the Control Panel. Refer to your Kofax documentation for instructions on setting up a scanner source.


    Note:

    To use image processing settings, you must configure a scanner source with image processing.

  2. In the Oracle Document Capture screen, click the Manage Scan Profiles button on the toolbar.

  3. In the side pane of the Manage Scan Profiles screen, select a scan profile.

  4. Click the Scanner tab.

  5. Choose Scanner from the Scan Source options.

  6. Click Select Source. In the Source field, select the scanner source you configured in step 1 and click OK. Scan initializes and reserves the device so that the scanner settings can be configured.

  7. Click Source Settings and adjust the default scanner settings.

    Available settings depend on the selected scanner. Scanner settings include such options as resolution, paper size, timeout, duplex, Auto Document Feeder (ADF), and contrast.

    In general, set your scanner settings so they accommodate most of the documents being scanned using the selected scan profile. Scanning users can override a profile's scanner settings without changing the profile, then select the profile again at any time to reload the default profile settings.

3.5 Importing Images

Follow these steps to set a selected scan profile to import rather than scan images.

  1. Using the Kofax Source Manager (KSM), define a disk source. Use the KSM (32-bit) icon in the Control Panel. Refer to your Kofax documentation for instructions on setting up a disk source. Scan supports multiple disk sources.


    Note:

    To use image processing settings with imported images, you must configure a disk source with image processing.

  2. In the Oracle Document Capture screen, click the Manage Scan Profiles button on the toolbar.

  3. In the side pane of the Manage Scan Profiles screen, select a scan profile.

  4. Click the Scanner tab.

  5. Choose Disk from the Scan Source options.

  6. Click Select Source. In the Source field, select a disk source and click OK.

  7. In the Default Directory for File Import field, specify an import directory. When users begin scanning, this path will be selected in the standard file dialog box that prompts users to select files to import.

  8. Select the Delete Files After Import field to delete images after they are imported.

3.6 Selecting Image Processing Settings

Follow these steps to select image processing settings for scan profiles. These settings can make images easier to read, reduce file sizes and improve processing.


Note:

Image processing options require an Image Processing license from Kofax. Contact Kofax for more information.

  1. In the Oracle Document Capture screen, click the Manage Scan Profiles button on the toolbar.

  2. In the side pane of the Manage Scan Profiles screen, select a scan profile.

  3. Click the Image Processing tab. Image processing options are displayed. A light bulb displays next to options enabled for this profile.

  4. Select an image processing option and choose settings. Image processing options are provided for:

3.6.1 Straightening Skewed Images

Follow these steps to automatically straighten skewed images using the Deskew filter. Also see "Deskew".

  1. In the Oracle Document Capture screen, click the Manage Scan Profiles button on the toolbar.

  2. In the side pane of the Manage Scan Profiles screen, select a scan profile.

  3. Click the Image Processing tab.

  4. On the Image Processing tab, click Deskew. The Deskew Properties dialog box is displayed.

  5. Select the Enable field.

  6. Complete the settings.

  7. Click OK. Save the profile.

3.6.2 Removing Speckles

Follow these steps to automatically remove speckles from images. Speckles are groups of black pixels surrounded by white pixels (or white pixels surrounded by black pixels). Also see "Despeckle".

  1. In the Oracle Document Capture screen, click the Manage Scan Profiles button on the toolbar.

  2. In the side pane of the Manage Scan Profiles screen, select a scan profile.

  3. Click the Image Processing tab.

  4. On the Image Processing tab, click Despeckle. The Despeckle Properties dialog box is displayed.

  5. Select the Enable field.

  6. Complete the settings.

  7. Click OK. Save the profile.

3.6.3 Enhancing Lines, Smoothing Characters and Removing Noise

Follow these steps to set image filters for enhancing images. Also see "Image Filters".

  1. In the Oracle Document Capture screen, click the Manage Scan Profiles button on the toolbar.

  2. In the side pane of the Manage Scan Profiles screen, select a scan profile.

  3. Click the Image Processing tab.

  4. On the Image Processing tab, click Image Filter. The Image Filter Properties dialog box is displayed.

  5. Select a filter and select the Enable field. The following filters are available:

    Filter Description
    Character Smoothing Smooths characters and lines. See "Character Smoothing".
    Thinning Filter Thins characters and lines and may remove background noise. See "Thinning Filter".
    Thicken Filter Thickens characters and lines and may exaggerate background noise. See "Thicken Filter".
    Smooth and Clean Smooths characters, removes background noise, and may eliminate lines. See "Smooth and Clean".
    Fill Line Breaks Fills in and smithies lines. See "Fill Line Breaks".
    Smooth, Clean and preserve h-v lines Smithies characters and lines and removes background noise. See "Smooth, Clean and Preserve H-V Lines".
    Fill Line Breaks and preserve h-v lines Fills in and smithies lines while maintaining the interline gap. See "Fill Line Breaks and Preserve H-V Lines".
    Light Thicken Thickens characters and lines and may exaggerate background noise, but is not as aggressive as the Thicken filter. See "Light Thicken Filter".
    Outline Extracts an outline of all image elements. See "Outline".


    Note:

    When using the image filters, it is recommended that you process a test image to determine the best settings for your file cabinet. The default settings, which have been calibrated for typical, real-world images, should work in most cases. If adjustments are necessary, they should be made carefully to achieve the desired results.

  6. Complete the settings.

  7. Click OK. Save the profile.

3.6.4 Removing Lines and Repairing Text

Follow these steps to automatically remove horizontal or vertical lines from images. The Line Removal feature can also repair text that intersects the lines that are removed. Removing lines and repairing characters improves the readability of images for OCR processing. Also see "Line Removal".

  1. In the Oracle Document Capture screen, click the Manage Scan Profiles button on the toolbar.

  2. In the side pane of the Manage Scan Profiles screen, select a scan profile.

  3. Click the Image Processing tab.

  4. On the Image Processing tab, click Line Removal. The Line Removal Properties dialog box is displayed.

  5. Select the Enable field.

  6. Complete the settings.

  7. Click OK. Save the profile.

3.6.5 Setting Patch Code Detection

Follow these steps to specify whether and how patch codes are detected during scanning. You can use patch codes detected during scanning in index profiles to separate documents. You can also use patch codes in scan profiles to stop the scanner, which can be useful for changing scanner settings between batches. Also see "Patch Code".


Note:

As an alternative to using patch codes, you can specify that a bar code be interpreted as a patch code, as well as being used as a bar code. This can be useful if the first page of each document contains a bar code. See "Setting Bar Code Detection" and "Bar Codes Properties".

  1. In the Oracle Document Capture screen, click the Manage Scan Profiles button on the toolbar.

  2. In the side pane of the Manage Scan Profiles screen, select a scan profile.

  3. Click the Image Processing tab.

  4. On the Image Processing tab, click Patch Code. The Patch Code Properties dialog box is displayed.

  5. Select the Enable field.

  6. Complete the settings.

  7. Click OK. Save the profile.

3.6.6 Removing Unwanted Shading

Follow these steps to automatically remove unwanted shaded areas from images. Also see "Deshade Properties".

  1. In the Oracle Document Capture screen, click the Manage Scan Profiles button on the toolbar.

  2. In the side pane of the Manage Scan Profiles screen, select a scan profile.

  3. Click the Image Processing tab.

  4. On the Image Processing tab, click Deshade. The Deshade Properties dialog box is displayed.

  5. Select the Enable field.

  6. Complete the settings.

  7. Click OK. Save the profile.

3.6.7 Removing Streaks

Follow these steps to automatically remove streaks from images. Also see "Streak Removal".

  1. In the Oracle Document Capture screen, click the Manage Scan Profiles button on the toolbar.

  2. In the side pane of the Manage Scan Profiles screen, select a scan profile.

  3. Click the Image Processing tab.

  4. On the Image Processing tab, click Streak Removal. The Streak Properties dialog box is displayed.

  5. Select the Enable field.

  6. Complete the settings.

  7. Click OK. Save the profile.

3.6.8 Removing Black Borders

Follow these steps to automatically remove black borders from images. Also see "Black Border".

  1. In the Oracle Document Capture screen, click the Manage Scan Profiles button on the toolbar.

  2. In the side pane of the Manage Scan Profiles screen, select a scan profile.

  3. Click the Image Processing tab.

  4. On the Image Processing tab, click Black Border. The Black Border Properties dialog box is displayed.

  5. Select the Enable field.

  6. Complete the settings.

  7. Click OK. Save the profile.

3.6.9 Setting Bar Code Detection

Follow these steps to specify whether and how bar codes are detected during scanning. You can use bar code values detected during scanning in index profiles to separate documents or to assign to index fields. Also see "Bar Codes Properties".

  1. In the Oracle Document Capture screen, click the Manage Scan Profiles button on the toolbar.

  2. In the side pane of the Manage Scan Profiles screen, select a scan profile.

  3. Click the Image Processing tab.

  4. On the Image Processing tab, click Bar Code. The Bar Code Properties dialog box is displayed.

  5. Select the Enable field.

  6. Complete the settings.

  7. Click OK. Save the profile.

3.7 Endorsing Scanned Documents

Follow these steps to set automatic imprinting of images as they are scanned.


Note:

To use endorsing, you must have an endorsing-capable scanner supported by the Kofax engine. Some scanners support automatic endorsing, while others support manual endorsing or both. The scanner determines the available endorsing options. Refer to your scanner documentation for more information.

  1. In the Oracle Document Capture screen, click the Manage Scan Profiles button on the toolbar.

  2. In the side pane of the Manage Scan Profiles screen, select a scan profile.

  3. Click the Endorsing tab.

  4. Select Automatic Endorsing or Manual Endorsing.

  5. Click Configure.

  6. If you selected manual endorsing, configure manual options.

    1. Type the text you want displayed on each page.

    2. Select the fields corresponding to items you want displayed with the endorsement.

  7. If you selected automatic endorsing, configure automatic options.

    1. Select Automatic Annotation and Endorser options.

    2. Set text definition settings.

    3. Set font settings.

    4. Set Counter Increment settings.

    5. Set Counter Reset options.

3.8 Testing Scan Profiles as a User

Follow these steps to scan or import documents using a selected scan profile. For details about batch scanning options, see the User's Guide for Oracle Document Capture.

  1. In the Oracle Document Capture screen, click the Batch Scanning button on the toolbar. The Batch Scanning screen is displayed.

  2. In the Profile field, select a scan profile.

  3. If a prefix is not displayed in the Batch Name field, enter a batch name.

  4. Place the documents on the feeder tray of the scanner.

  5. Click the Begin Scanning button on the toolbar. Scan begins scanning the documents, adding to the batch until there are no more pages on the feeder tray. When done, the batch is added to the Batch Name list.

  6. Click the Review Batch button and examine the batch in the Reviewing Batch screen. Click the Page Information button to activate a new screen that displays details about the selected image. Keeping this screen open is useful while creating or editing profiles. You can use it, for example, to monitor patch and bar code recognition and image file size.
