Preparing to Install Sun MTP

In addition to explaining how to prepare to install the Sun MTP software, this chapter contains the following topics:

1. Read Chapter 4 if you are upgrading from an earlier version of the software.

2. Make sure that there is enough disk space available for Sun MTP, other software, and your applications.

3. Select a file system in which to install Sun MTP.

4. Install the prerequisite software described in Software Requirements.

Disk Space

Before installing the Sun MTP software, determine how much disk space is available. Then calculate your requirements, being sure to include space for:

By default, the Sun MTP $KIXSYS directory is used to store many files, including debug snapshots, which can use a lot of space. You might want to set the KIXSNAPDIR environment variable to point to a different directory for these files. Refer to the Sun Mainframe Transaction Processing Software Configuration Guide for a description of $KIXSNAPDIR.

You must locate a file system that is large enough to accommodate the disk requirements of your region. Use the df command to determine how much disk space is available.

$ /bin/df
/pkgs  (/dev/dsk/c0t4d0s7 ):  306548 blocks   690318 files

Multiple file systems can exist on the system. Look for the value that identifies the free space on each file system.

Selecting a File System

Before you select the installation file system, consider that at some point you will need to install a new release. Because you should not overlay an old version with a new one, you must select a file system that can accommodate multiple copies of the software. This will enable you to evaluate the new version before putting it into production. At a minimum, the file system you select must have enough space to accommodate one Sun MTP system.

To control the version of Sun MTP being used for production, install each version in its own directory (for example, /pkgs/MTP8.0.0). Write down the directory path name where you plan to install the new version and proceed to Chapter 3, which describes how to create the installation directory and install Sun MTP. See also To Create Symbolic Links.

Note - Do not install the software on the / (root) or /usr file systems because these file systems contain system software. In addition, do not install the software in the /tmp file system, because the contents of this file system are often deleted when the system is rebooted.

Kernel Parameters That Affect Sun MTP

In most situations, you do not need to modify the kernel parameters of your system to run the software. If, however, you are unable to bring up your system after installation, refer to the Sun Mainframe Transaction Processing Software Configuration Guide for information about kernel values and how to modify them.
