Introduction

The Netra j 3.0 Installation Guide describes how to install or upgrade to the Netra(TM) j 3.0 server software. It explains how to obtain the software from a Sun Microsystems(TM) web site, install it, and perform the initial configuration. Additionally, it contains a form you can use to gather the information needed to set up network computers that use a Java(TM) based operating system.

Hardware and Software Requirements

This section describes the hardware and software requirements for Netra j 3.0.

Hardware

The Netra j 3.0 software can run on any Sun(TM) 4u UltraSPARC(TM) or 4m hyperSPARC(TM) platform supported by the Solaris(TM) 2.5.1 or 2.6 operating environment.

The standard installation of the Netra j 3.0 software requires at least 170 megabytes of disk space. The following table lists the disk space requirements for specific directories.

If additional client-server software is installed, such as that on the Netra(TM) Ready(TM) CD, more disk space is needed. Refer to the that software's documentation for disk space requirements.

Note -

If you download the Netra j 3.0 software from the Web, you will need an additional 280 megabytes of temporary disk space in a download directory.

To verify your free disk space, type this command as the superuser: 

# df -lk

If the system to be configured as a Netra j 3.0 server is not already part of a functional network, then you will need a CD-ROM drive, monitor, keyboard, and mouse for installation and initial configuration. If the system is already part of a network, these tasks can be performed from a client.

Though not necessary, an internal diskette drive and an external tape drive are helpful accessories. An internal diskette drive enables you to back up the Netra j 3.0 server configuration onto removable media, for secure storage. An external tape drive enables you to back up portions of the Netra j 3.0 server file system.

The system to be configured as a Netra j 3.0 server must contain the following software:

Before You Start

Before obtaining the Netra j 3.0 software for installation or upgrade, certain aspects of the software are considered. Additionally, the Network Computer Configuration Form is filled out.

Web Server and Web Browser Special Conditions

Proxy Cache Special Conditions

A proxy cache enables the Netra j 3.0 server to place web pages that are frequently visited by users into a local cache, thereby reducing the wait time for those web pages to load. The Proxy Cache Service module of the Netra j 3.0 software is functional only if you designate a UNIX File System (UFS) exclusively for the proxy cache storage area. This file system must mount at /var/opt/SUNWcache. Ideally, an additional disk (either internal or external) is used to provide the space needed for the proxy cache service.

Instructions for adding a Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) disk to the Netra j 3.0 server and configuring the Proxy Cache Service module are provided in the "Proxy Cache Reference" and "Using Proxy Cache Services" chapters of the Netra j 3.0 Administrator's Guide.

Pre-Existing NIS Master Services

When you install or upgrade to Netra j 3.0, the Network Information System (NIS) master server file, /var/yp/Makefile, is renamed to /var/yp/Makefile.orig and a Netra j 3.0 compatible /var/yp/Makefile is provided. This new file may affect the NIS master services on a system that was pre-configured as a NIS master server. To return to the previous NIS master server map contents, rename /var/yp/Makefile.orig to /var/yp/Makefile.

Network Computer Configuration Form

The "Network Computer Configuration Form " lists the information required to set up and configure network computers (NCs) in a Netra j 3.0 network environment. Complete this form before installation or upgrade of the Netra j 3.0 software. Advance preparation will make the configuration of the NCs much easier.

Obtaining the Netra j 3.0 Software

You can obtain the Netra j 3.0 software by downloading it from the Web or from the Netra j 3.0 CD.

To Download the Software From the Web

The Netra j 3.0 software is provided as self-extracting archives to make it easier to transfer over the Internet. To receive the complete Netra j 3.0 software collection, download all of the available archives.

  1. In your web browser, go to:

    http://www.sun.com/netra-j

  2. Find the Netra j 3.0 software and follow the instructions to register yourself and obtain privileges to download the software.

  3. Click on the appropriate links to initiate a download, and specify the directory where you want to save the archives.

    • For low-encryption English locales, select these self-extracting archives:

    Download either of the last two archives according to the version of the Solaris operating environment you are using.

  4. Open a shell window, log in to the download directory, and verify the archives are present.

    In the following procedures, this directory is referred to as download_directory.

  5. Change the properties of each archive downloaded to executable, and then run it.

    For example: 

    % chmod +x netra30file_1lo.bin
% ./netraj30file_1lo.bin

    Each archive will extract several packages to download_directory.

  6. Remove the original archives.

    For example: 

    % rm netraj30file_1lo.bin
% rm netraj30file_2lo.bin
% rm netraj30file_3lo.bin
% rm netraj30file_4lo.bin
% rm solaris251addonslo.bin
% rm solaris26addonslo.bin

To Obtain the CD From the Web

The Netra j 3.0 software is available on the Netra j 3.0 CD, part number 798-1356-10. You can order the CD from your Sun Microsystems reseller or from the Web.

  1. In your web browser, go to:

    http://www.sun.com/netra-j

  2. Find the Netra j 3.0 software and follow the instructions to register yourself and order the Netra j 3.0 CD.

To Mount the CD

  1. As superuser, open a shell window and type this command to open the CD-ROM drive. 

    # cd / ; eject cdrom

  2. Place the Netra j 3.0 CD into the drive tray and gently push the tray closed.

    Note -

    If your File Manager window opens when you insert the CD, quit the File Manager window immediately. You must use only the command line interface to install or upgrade to the Netra j 3.0 software.

Installing the Netra j 3.0 Software

After you download and extract the Netra j 3.0 software from the web, or mount it from the CD, you can install it following these instructions. If you are upgrading from Netra i 3.1-3.2.1 or Netra j 1.1-2.0.1, go to "Upgrading to Netra j 3.0".

Note -

Before installation, fill out the "Network Computer Configuration Form ". After installation, refer to "Installation and Upgrade Notes" for further information.

To Install the Software

  1. As superuser, open a shell window and change to the Tools directory.

    • If you downloaded the Netra j 3.0 software from the Web, type: 

      # cd /download_directory/Tools

    • If you are installing the software from a CD, type: 

      # cd /cdrom/cdrom0/Tools

  2. Install the Netra j 3.0 software using the installation script. 

    # ./netra_install

    For users in non-English locales, the installation script asks what locale to install. Select the most appropriate locale.

  3. Refer to "Installation and Upgrade Notes", then continue on to the next section.

Logging In to the Netra j 3.0 Interface

This section describes how to log in to the Netra j 3.0 system administrator's account at the server console and from a client or host on the network.

When you install Netra j 3.0, a special account with the login of setup is created. When you log in as setup, the HotJava Browser automatically starts and you have access to the Netra j 3.0 administration interface. You can use other industry-standard web browsers for day-to-day Netra j 3.0 administration tasks, but you must use the HotJava Browser supplied with the Netra j 3.0 software to access the HotJava Views administration pages.

Note -

Use only the Netra j 3.0 administration interface navigation buttons when working with the Netra j 3.0 server. Using the web browser's navigation buttons may put the Netra j 3.0 server into an undefined state.

To Log In at the Server Console

  1. Exit out of the windowing environment and obtain a console login prompt.

  2. Log in as setup and type setup as the password.

    hostname console login: setup

    Password:

    HotJava Browser is launched and the Login Required window is displayed.

  3. Type setup in the Login field and setup in the Password field.

    The Netra j 3.0 Welcome page is displayed.

  4. Perform the Initial Configuration.

To Log In From a Client or Host on the Network

  1. Start a web browser and type the following URL into its location field: 

    http://server_name.domain:81/

    Where server_name.domain is the host name and domain of the Netra j 3.0 server.

    A login window is displayed.

  2. Type setup for the User ID and setup for the password.

    The Netra j 3.0 Welcome page is displayed.

  3. Perform the Initial Configuration.

Performing the Initial Configuration

You must perform an initial configuration after installing the Netra j 3.0 software, or when primary Netra j 3.0 configuration is required.

To Perform a Complete Initial Configuration

  1. At the Netra j 3.0 Welcome page, click on Administration.

    The Initial Configuration page is displayed.

    Because the Netra j 3.0 server is being configured for the first time, the Initial Configuration page is displayed. During a complete initial configuration, three modules are configured:

    • System Defaults

    • Administration Web Server Password

    • Local Area Network

      Note -

      Of the three modules to be configured for a complete initial configuration, you may need to configure only one or two. The reason is that the Netra j 3.0 software has interrogated your system file state and determined what module configuration is required. If a module's administration page is not displayed during the complete initial configuration, that module does not need to be configured. When this occurs, read ahead until what you see on your screen is described in the text.

    Two optional tasks are offered:

    • Restart Netra server with configuration diskette inserted

    • Restore Netra server configuration

  2. Click the highlighted System Defaults link.

    The System Defaults Administration page is displayed with the default time zone and default system locale.

  3. If necessary, select a new default system time zone and locale from the lists, and then click OK.

    If you selected a non-English locale, the Netra j 3.0 administration interface is now configured for that locale.

  4. Click the forward arrow icon to advance to the next configuration task.

    The Administration Password Administration page is displayed.

  5. Type the password setup into the upper field.

  6. Type the new administration password in the middle and lower fields, and then click OK.

    Note -

    When the Administration Web Server password is changed, the browser connection must be re-authenticated. The next four steps explain how.

  7. Use the forward arrow icon to advance to the next configuration task.

    A browser window opens, indicating that re-authentication is needed.

  8. Click OK.

  9. In the Password window, type setup in the User ID field and type the new password in the Password field.

  10. Click OK.

  11. Click the forward arrow icon to advance to the next configuration task.

    The Add Ethernet TCP/IP Interface Administration page is displayed.

  12. Type the Host Name or the Host Address of the interface into the upper field and the Netmask into the lower field.

    If you do not know the netmask, leave this field as it is.

  13. Click OK.

  14. Click the forward arrow icon to advance to the Main Administration page.

To Configure NCs

Instructions for configuring the NCs and DNS services are described in the Netra j 3.0 Administrator's Guide, Chapter 2, "Network Computer Server." You need the Network Computer Configuration Form, which you filled out previously, to perform these procedures.

  1. From the Main Administration page, under "Documentation" choose Online Documentation.

    The Documentation page is displayed.

  2. Choose a language, and then click on Administrator's Guide.

    The Administrator's Guide is displayed.

Completing the Configuration

At the top of the Main Administration page, there may be a sentence, "There are configuration changes which have not been saved." It may continue with "and which require a system restart." The presence of the sentence indicates that the tasks are necessary. The words "saved" and "restart" are links to the Save and Restore Configuration module and the Restart and Shutdown module respectively.

To Complete the Configuration

  1. From the Main Administration page, use the displayed modules to perform any further system administration tasks, such as setting up mail aliases, configuring a name service, or setting routing options.

    Refer to the Network Computer Configuration Form and any relevant chapters in the Netra j 3.0 Administrator's Guide for additional information on each administration module.

  2. Once server configuration is complete, save the configuration information as follows:

    1. Insert a blank diskette into the diskette drive.

      If there is no diskette drive in the Netra j 3.0 server, the configuration is saved to the file system.

    2. At the top of the Main Administration page, click the link "saved".

      The Save and Restore Configuration page is displayed.

    3. If you are saving the configuration to diskette, click Save configuration to diskette; otherwise, click Save configuration to file system.

    4. Click the OK button to confirm the operation.

    5. Click the home icon to return to the Main Administration page.

  3. If a system restart is necessary, a sentence with the link "restart" is displayed. Follow these steps:

    1. At the top of the Main Administration page, click the link "restart".

      The Restart and Shutdown Administration page is displayed.

    2. Select Restart.

    3. Click OK to proceed with the restart process.

      The server is restarted with the new configuration.

Upgrading to Netra j 3.0

The Netra j 3.0 software includes upgrade scripts to simplify the upgrade from either Netra i 3.1-3.2.1 or Netra j 1.1-2.0.1.

Note -

When you upgrade from a localized version of Netra j or Netra i to an English only version of Netra j 3.0, all of the localization packages are deleted and the installation is in English only.

Netra j to Netra j 3.0 Upgrade Conditions

Upgrading from Netra j 1.0 is not supported; you must upgrade to Netra j 1.1 first. Additionally, HotJava Views configuration information is not preserved when upgrading from Netra j 1.1-2.0 to Netra j 3.0.

Netra i to Netra j 3.0 Upgrade Conditions

Certain conditions exist for upgrading from Netra i to Netra j 3.0.

Upgrade Paths

There are two possible upgrade paths: upgrade to Netra j 3.0 and Solaris 2.6, or upgrade to Netra j 3.0 without a Solaris upgrade.

Note -

Before upgrade, fill out the "Network Computer Configuration Form ". After upgrade, refer to "Installation and Upgrade Notes" for further information.

To Upgrade to Netra j 3.0 and Solaris 2.6

  1. If your Netra server hardware includes a diskette drive, insert a blank formatted diskette into the drive.

  2. As superuser, open a shell window and change to the Tools directory.

    • If you downloaded the Netra j 3.0 software from the Web, type: 

      # cd /download_directory/Tools

    • If you are installing the software from the Netra j 3.0 CD, type: 

      # cd /cdrom/cdrom0/Tools

  3. Use the save script to save the existing Netra configuration. 

    # ./netra_save

    Note -

    If your Netra server does not have a diskette drive, the Netra configuration is saved to the local file system. You must copy the /var/tmp/netra/netraj3_0.tar file to tape or to a remote machine on the local area network.

  4. Perform a backup of all file systems not related to the Netra software. This includes any web pages created as part of an HTML document hierarchy.

    You can use the File System Backup and Restore module of the Netra administration interface to back up the file systems, if a tape drive is connected to the Netra server.

  5. Install Solaris 2.6 from the Solaris 2.6 CD.

    Follow the instructions in the Solaris Advanced Installation Guide, which is included with the Solaris 2.6 CD.

  6. Install the Netra j 3.0 software. 

    # ./netra_install

    For users in non-English locales, the installation script asks what locale to install. Select the most appropriate locale.

  7. If you copied the /var/tmp/netra/netraj3_0.tar file to tape or to a remote machine in Step 3, copy the file back to the Netra server file system.

  8. Restore the Netra configuration. 

    # ./netra_restore

  9. Refer to "Installation and Upgrade Notes", then return to here.

  10. Restore the file systems you previously backed up.

    You can use the File System Backup and Restore module of the Netra j 3.0 administration interface to restore the file systems, if a tape drive is connected to the Netra j 3.0 server.

To Upgrade to Netra j 3.0 Without Upgrading Solaris

  1. As superuser, open a shell window and change to the Tools directory.

    • If you downloaded the Netra j 3.0 software from the Web, type: 

      # cd /download_directory/Tools

    • If you are installing the software from the Netra j 3.0 CD, type: 

      # cd /cdrom/cdrom0/Tools

  2. Use the upgrade script to save the Netra configuration, remove the existing Netra software, install Netra j 3.0, and restore the Netra configuration. 

    # ./netra_upgrade

    For users in non-English locales, the upgrade script asks what locale to install. Select the most appropriate locale.

Installation and Upgrade Notes

This section contains background information on Netra j 3.0 and special installation and upgrade instructions.

Localized Installations and Upgrades

Though the install and upgrade scripts install localization packages, the Netra j 3.0 administration interface remains in English until the System Defaults module is configured. Then the administration interface becomes localized.

Local Name Service

After an upgrade, use the Local Name Service module to check if the Netra j 3.0 server host name is mapped to the loopback IP address (127.0.0.1). If it is, change this address to the IP address of the JavaStation boot server. This may be the Netra j 3.0 server itself. Then map localhost to 127.0.0.1.

Netra j 3.0 Web Servers

Netra j 3.0 requires two web servers. One web server resides at port 81 and serves the pages of the Netra j 3.0 administration interface to a web browser. The other resides at port 80 and delivers the HotJava Views application to the NCs.

The AnswerBook online documentation collections listed in the following table are located in the Misc subdirectory of either the downloaded web software or the Netra j 3.0 CD. These files are not automatically installed with Netra j 3.0.

To Install an AnswerBook Collection

  1. As superuser, open a shell window and change to the Misc directory.

    • If you downloaded the Netra j 3.0 software from the Web, type: 

      # cd /download_directory/Misc

    • If you are installing the AnswerBook from the Netra j 3.0 CD, type: 

      # cd /cdrom/cdrom0/Misc

  2. Type the following command to install the AnswerBook collection: 

    # pkgadd -d . pkgname

    Where pkgname is a package name listed in the previous table.

    Note -

    For further information on installing an AnswerBook collection or the AnswerBook server, refer to the Information Library for Solaris 2.6 (SPARC Platform Edition).

GO-Joe Server Software

GO-Joe server software is located in the Misc subdirectory of either the downloaded web software or the Netra j 3.0 CD. It is not automatically installed with Netra j 3.0. This software should be installed on the JavaStation X server, which can either be the Netra j 3.0 server or another system on the network.

Note -

GO-Joe client software is installed during the Netra j 3.0 installation. For information on setting up network computers to use GO-Joe client software, refer to the Netra j 3.0 Administrator's Guide.

To Install GO-Joe Server Software

  1. As superuser, open a shell window and change to the Misc directory.

    • If you downloaded the Netra j 3.0 software from the Web, type: 

      # cd /download_directory/Misc

    • If you are installing the GO-Joe software from the Netra j 3.0 CD, type: 

      # cd /cdrom/cdrom0/Misc

  2. Type the following command to install the GO-Joe software: 

    # pkgadd -d . SUNWgjvxs

Network Computer Configuration Form

This form lists the information you need to set up and configure network computers (NCs) in a Netra j 3.0 network environment. Refer to the Netra j 3.0 Administrator's Guide for instructions configuring the Netra j 3.0 server for NCs.

Enter the information recorded on this form into the Name Service administration pages and Network Computer Server administration pages of the Netra j 3.0 administration interface.

DNS Domain Name 

The DNS domain where the NCs reside.  

  

 

DNS Server Address(es) 

The host address of the DNS server for the NCs.  

  

 

NIS Domain Name (optional) 

The NIS domain in which the NCs reside.  

  

 

NIS Server Address(es) (optional) 

The host address(es) of the NIS servers for the NCs.  

  

 

Router Address(es) (optional) 

The host address(es) of the routers to be used by the NCs. If not specified, the JavaOS(TM) software on each NC will broadcast looking for a router.  

  

 

Lease Time (in days) 

The duration (in days) of an IP address lease. IP addresses are leased to NCs, not assigned permanently. For more information, refer to the Netra j 3.0 Administrator's Guide.

  

 

Lease Negotiation 

A yes or no value that specifies whether the boot server renews the IP address leases of clients requesting lease renewal.  

  

 

Network Interfaces 

A list of the network interfaces accessible to the Netra j 3.0 system. Each interface is associated with a physical device. However, a physical device can have multiple network interfaces.  

  

 

Time Zone  

The time zone in which the NCs are located. 

  

Add A Network Computer 

Host Name 

The host name of the NC. 

  

 

MAC Address 

The MAC address of the NC. This address is a unique assigned number built into the hardware of the computer and displayed at boot time. 

  

 

Host Address 

The host address of the NC. 

  

 

Enter Lease Time 

The duration (in days) of an IP address lease. IP addresses are leased to NCs, not assigned permanently. For more information, refer to the Netra j 3.0 Administrator's Guide.

  

 

Default Application 

Select the application to be run on this NC. 

  

 

Select NC locale 

Select the language to be used at this NC. 

  

 

Select Keyboard 

Select the native keyboard to be used at this NC. 

  

 

Vendor Specific Options (optional) 

Vendor specific options, (JavaOS properties) to be delivered to this NC during boot-up. 

  

Add Multiple Network Computers 

Host Name Prefix 

The common prefix of a group of automatically generated host names. 

  

 

Starting IP address 

The starting IP address when sequential addresses are generated for the NCs. 

  

 

Number of NCs 

The number of network computers for which addresses are generated. 

  

 

Enter Lease Time 

The duration (in days) of an IP address lease. IP addresses are leased to NCs, not assigned permanently. For more information, refer to the Netra j 3.0 Administrator's Guide.

  

 

Default Application 

Select the application to be run on the NCs. 

  

 

Select NC locale 

Select the language to be used at the NCs. 

  

 

Select Keyboard 

Select the native keyboard to be used at the NCs. 

  

 

Vendor Specific Options (optional) 

Vendor specific options, (JavaOS properties) to be delivered to the NCs during boot-up. 

  

DNS Client Administration 

DNS Domain Name 

The DNS domain that will be used to resolve partially-qualified host names. Usually, this is the local domain name. 

  

 

Name Server 1 Address 

The host address of the DNS server that will be tried first for all DNS queries. 

  

 

Name Server 2 Address (optional) 

The host address of the DNS server to use, if the first name server is unreachable. 

  

 

Name Server 3 Address (optional) 

The host address of the DNS server to use, if the first two name servers are unreachable. 

  

Basic DNS Server Configuration 

DNS domain name 

Enter the name of the DNS domain in which the Netra server resides (or will reside on completion of the DNS configuration). 

  

 

DNS administrator's user name 

Enter the name or alias of the local user (e.g. root) who is responsible for DNS. 

  

 

Root Name Server/IP Address 

The fully-qualified host names and host addresses of a set of DNS servers that can be contacted to resolve name queries. 

  

Add DNS Primary Domain 

Host Names/Host Addresses 

The host names and corresponding host addresses of the hosts in the domain. 

  

 

Host Aliases/Host Names 

Enter alias names for hosts in the domain followed by a known name of the host. 

  

 

Mail Addresses/Preferences/Mail Servers 

Use this field if people are expected to send mail to the domain rather than directly to the mail server.The preference value (an integer) determines which mail server to use if the domain has more than one: the lower the value, the higher the priority of the corresponding mail server. 

  

 

Domains/DNS Servers 

Enter records for other DNS servers. Each record should consist of the name of the domain which the server is responsible for followed by the name of the server. 

  

Advanced Global Parameters, Localization Properties (optional) 

Input Method Server (optional) 

A server with a language engine to interpret the keyboard input method (for Korean, Chinese, and Japanese languages only). This server must be running a localized version of Solaris.  

  

 

Input Method Port (optional) 

The port where the input method server's language engine is accessible.  

  

 

Fonts Server (optional)  

The host address or host name of the fonts server for the NCs. A fonts server is required for Asian locales and if alternate fonts will be used by the NCs. For more information, refer to the Netra j 3.0 Administrator's Guide.

  

 

Fonts Directory (optional)  

The directory location of the fonts on the font server for the NCs.  

  

 

Localized Resources Server (optional) 

The host address or host name of the localized resources server for the NCs. Localized resources, such as keyboard mapping tables, support NC operation in different languages. For more information, refer to the Netra j 3.0 Administrator's Guide.

  

 

Localized Resources Directory (optional) 

The directory location of the localized resources for the NCs.  

  

 

Login Locales List (optional) 

The list of locales presented as choices to the user logging on to a NC.
