1.2 Identifying the UNIX Version of Your Operating System

Determine which version of the operating system you are running. For example, for either Solaris 1.x (SunOS 4.x) or Solaris 2.x (SunOS 5.x) enter:

-----------
uname -rs -----------

Note - If you are running any of the Solaris 1.x (SunOS 4.x) versions of the operating systems, you must read the next two sections.

1.2.1 Special Considerations for SunOS 4.1 Release

If you are running SunOS Version 4.1, you need to modify the kernel of the operating system, as described in the Solaris 1.x (SunOS 4.x) Handbook for SMCC Peripherals.

1.2.2 Special Considerations for SunOS 4.1.1 Release

If you are running SunOS Version 4.1.1 or later, you do not need to modify the kernel of the operating system.

1.2.3 Special Considerations for Solaris 2.x Release

If you are running Solaris 2.x (SunOS 5.x) or later, you do not need to modify the kernel of the operating system.

1.3 Shutting Down the System

Before installing the SSHA card into your system, you must shut down your system in an orderly manner. To shut down your system, follow the procedure described in this section.

When the operating system or any other standalone program has already booted, do not use a key combination, such as <L1+A, <Stop+A, or <Break, to shut down your system. Abruptly aborting program execution may damage data files.
    1. Save any files you are currently editing. Quit any applications that will lose information when your system halts. Refer to your Sun System User's Guide for information about ending a work session.

Note - The system might not recognize the new device unless you follow the shutdown procedure in the handbook for SMCC peripherals.

Before turning off the system power, you must halt the operating system.

    2. Go to the appropriate handbook for your operating system (the Handbook for SMCC Peripherals) that came with the SSHA card.
    3. See the section about shutting down the system and return to this manual after you perform this procedure.

1.4 Determining Your Open Boot PROM Release Number

If you are installing your SSHA card in a SPARCstation 1 or SPARCstation 1+, make sure that your open boot PROM is version 1.3 or greater. Your SSHA card will not work properly with earlier versions. At the prompt that you get after shutting down your system, type n for new command mode.

    1. At the ok prompt, type banner.

The screen lists a number of lines, including the release number of your system's open boot PROM.

------------------------------------------------------
> n ok banner SPARCstation 1+, Type -4 Keyboard ROM Rev. 1.3, 16MB memory installed . . ok old-mode Type b (boot), c (continue), or n (new command mode) ------------------------------------------------------
>
    2. If you have a SPARCstation 1 or a SPARCstation 1+ with an open boot PROM release number that is lower than 1.3, you need to replace the boot PROM on your system's CPU board or your SSHA card will not work properly. Call for assistance as suggested in the "Getting Help" section in the Preface of this manual.
    3. At the ok prompt, type old-mode to return to your standard screen prompt.

1.5 Powering Down Your System

Turn off the power to your system in this order:

    1. External module (if you have one)
    2. System
    3. Monitor

Caution - Make sure your system is shut off. The green LED at the front of the system s

hould not be lit, and the power supply fan should not be running. Do not disconnect the power cord from the system's power outlet or from the wall outlet. This connection provides the ground path necessary to safely remove and install the printed circuit boards and components without damaging them.

1.6 Unpacking the SSHA Card

    1. Remove the SSHA components from your packing box. You should have the following items:
      a. SSHA card (part number 501-1850)
      b. Installation manual (part number 800-5385)
      c. ESD (electrostatic discharge) kit (part number 560-1302)
    2. Always transport your SSHA card in its original container.
    3. Leave your SSHA card in its protective bag until you are ready to install it.
    4. Store your packing box and packing materials for future use.

1.7 Removing the Cover

To remove the system's cover, refer to your system's installation guide.

1.8 Attaching the Wrist Strap

You must attach the wrist strap to yourself and the system to prevent damage to your system. The wrist strap is a device that provides grounding between your body and the system's chassis for static electricity. Electric current and voltage do not pass through the wrist. Wrist straps are included with parts that could be damaged by static electricity.

Caution -

If you do not wear a wrist strap, boards and modules can be damaged by harmful electrical charges.

To attach a wrist strap to your wrist and the system:

    1. Wrap the grounding strap with the conductive adhesive tape twice around your wrist. Make sure the adhesive side is against your skin.

    2. Attach the adhesive copper strip to the system's chassis.

1.9 Locating SBus Slots

Locate your system's SBus slots. Figure 1-1 shows the interior of the SPARCstation 1 or SPARCstation 1+ with a frame buffer board in SBus slot 3 and no cards in SBus slots 1 or 2.

Figure 1-2 shows the interior of the SPARCstation IPC with no cards in either of its two SBus slots.

Figure 1-3 shows the interior of the SPARCstation 2 with no cards in the SBus slots. The SPARCstation 2 is delivered with a frame buffer in SBus slot 3 or a graphics board in SBus slots 2 and 3.

1.14 Booting the System

Boot your system to verify that it is working correctly.

To boot the system:

    1. Turn the power switches on in the following order:
      a. Monitor
      b. External drive (if you have one)
      c. System
    2. Go to the appropriate handbook for your operating system (the Handbook for SMCC Peripherals that came with the SSHA card).
    3. See the section about booting the system, and return to this book after you perform the procedure.
    4. After a minute or so, you see the login prompt.

The following device names are only valid for configuring this SCSI device in the SunOS 4.x operating environment. To determine the device name in the Solaris 2.x operating system, see the Solaris 2.x Handbook for SMCC Peripherals.

If the SSHA card has been correctly installed, you should see messages similar to the following:

-----------------------------------------------------
dma1 at SBus slot 1 0x100000 esp1 at SBus slot 1 0x200000 pri 3 esp1: Warning - no devices found for this SCSI bus or: esp1: sd4 at esp1 target 3 lun 0 -----------------------------------------------------
    5. If your SCSI devices are attached and you see the esp1: Warning - no devices found message, you must configure the kernel to add the SSHA SCSI bus devices as described in the Solaris 1.x (SunOS 4.x) Handbook for SMCC Peripherals.
    6. If your SCSI devices are attached to a system that is running version SunOS 4.x and you see a message such as sd4 at esp1 target 3 lun 0, your kernel is already configured correctly.
    7. If you see a message such as dma1 at SBus slot 1 0x100000 that is not followed by esp1 at SBus slot 1 0x200000, then your system Boot PROM is not Version 1.3 or higher as required. See the "Getting Help" section in the Preface of this manual.
    8. When you see the login prompt, you can login to your system. If you are unfamiliar with the login procedure, refer to the user's guide for your system.

1.15 Next Step
