This chapter supplies the information necessary to install or replace a 1.3 GB IPI disk drive within an IPI tray.
To install a 1.3 GB IPI disk drive in an IPI tray, follow the instructions given in Section 3.2, "Installing a 1.3 GB IPI Disk Drive."
To replace a 1.3 GB IPI disk drive in an IPI tray, first follow the instructions given in Section 3.1, "Removing a 1.3 GB IPI Disk Drive." Then follow the instructions given in Section 3.2, "Installing a 1.3 GB IPI Disk Drive."
Note - There are systems in the field that differ from the majority of production units in several minor details. When these differences affect the remove-and-replace procedures, this text covers both the standard and the variation.
Follow the directions given in the following sections to remove a 1.3 GB IPI disk drive from the 1.3 GB IPI tray.
Follow these directions to extend a 1.3 GB IPI tray from the cabinet and remove the top cover from the tray:
Repeat this step for the right slide rail.
Figure 3-1 Removing the Screws at the Rear of the Tray
Caution -
In order to accomplish the next step of removing the top cover, you may have to press the slide rail button a second time and extend the tray an inch or two past the latched position. Exercise extreme caution if you find you must extend the tray past the latched position, since the tray may come completely out of the cabinet if you extend it too far.Note - If you had to extend the tray past the latched position to remove the top cover, slide the tray back into the cabinet until you hear the tray click into place after you have removed the cover.
Caution -
Be sure you're grounded with a grounding wrist strap.Follow these instructions to remove a 1.3 GB IPI disk drive from an IPI tray:
To disconnect the cables, pivot the ejectors on the connector down, applying equal force to both ejectors (see Figure 3-2).
Figure 3-2 Proper Disconnecting Procedure
Repeat this procedure for every 1.3 GB IPI disk drive you want to remove from the tray.
Note - If you are removing the rear drive(s) from the 1.3 GB IPI tray so that you can remove the tray from the cabinet, after you have removed the drive(s), press the button in the center slide rail and pull the tray away from the cabinet to dismount it from the slide rails. If you want to replace the drives after you have removed the 1.3 GB IPI tray, follow the instructions given in Section 3.2.3, "Installing a 1.3 GB IPI Disk Drive."
Follow the instructions in these sections to install a 1.3 GB IPI disk drive.
Caution -
Do not expose the device(s) within the IPI tray to sudden temperature or humidity change. Such exposure could cause condensation within the drives which could damage the drives. At the installation site, allow the devices to remain in their packing containers until their temperature matches that of the surrounding air. Use the following as a guide to time allowed before unpacking the devices based upon the temperature of the device upon receipt:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Temperature Differential from Internal Acclimation Time and External Temperatures ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Degrees (F) Degrees (C) Hours +/- 15 +/- 8.3 1 +/- 20 +/- 11.1 2 +/- 30 +/- 16.6 4 +/- 40 +/- 22.2 6 +/- 50 +/- 27.7 7 +/- 60 +/- 33.3 8 ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Caution -
Store or transport the IPI tray and individual drives in the right- side up position only. Do not jostle the trays or bump the drives when moving them. Do not tilt the tray to extremes when unpacking them. Such physical shock or incorrect positioning can damage the drives. After unpacking the 1.3 GB IPI disk drive, inspect it for evidence of damage. If damaged, keep all contents and packing materials for the carrier's agent to inspect. Save packing materials for future use.
Caution -
A 1.3 GB IPI disk drive is an electromechanical device that may be damaged by excessive physical shock. Do not jar this device or drop it. A 1.3 GB IPI disk drive should be handled only by service personnel who are familiar with the correct methods of working with IPI devices.Note - An "Electro Static Discharge (ESD) Kit" is included with many options and upgrades shipped separately from the original system. This kit includes a wrist grounding strap which provides grounding between your body and the chassis ground. The kit also includes a Sun ESD mat on which to place the unit to prevent static charge from accumulating in the device.
Caution -
Connection to earth-ground must be provided to guard against damage to devices. Verify the cabinet power cord is connected to facilities power via plug receptacle or pigtail connection as appropriate. Ensure the facilities breaker serving the cabinet is OFF.You may also want to verify that the dip switches at the rear of the 1.3 GB IPI disk drive were set correctly before you install the drive. Appendix A of this manual gives you the correct dip switch settings for the 1.3 GB IPI disk drive.
The 1.3 GB IPI drives are installed in a tray with two, three or four drives to a tray. Follow these instructions to install a 1.3 GB IPI disk drive in an IPI tray:
Figure 3-3 Data Cabling in the Tray
Note - To connect the cables to the drive, pivot the connector latches up to lock the connector into place (see Figure 3-4).

Figure 3-5 DC Harness Cabling in the Tray
Figure 3-6 LED/Address Cabling in the Tray
There are four IPI address switches at the front of each tray, one for each drive within the tray. The addresses range from 0 to 7. Figure 3-7 shows the location of the IPI address switches on the 1.3 GB IPI tray.
To set the IPI address for the 1.3 GB IPI disk drive, press the button marked "+" to increment the address shown, or press the button marked "-" to decrement the address shown until you see the proper address in the window. Table 3-1 gives the IPI addresses for the 1.3 GB IPI drives within the 56" Data Center Cabinet, and Table 3-2 gives the IPI addresses for the 1.3 GB IPI drives within the 56" Data Center Expansion Cabinet.

Follow these instructions to finish the installation of the 1.3 GB IPI disk drive:
If you have more 1.3 GB IPI disk drives to install in your system, refer to Section 3.2, "Installing a 1.3 GB IPI Disk Drive," and follow the instructions given there.
If you have no other 1.3 GB IPI disk drives to install in your system, follow the instructions in Chapter 5, "Replacing the Panels and Powering On the System".
