2 System Overview

The SCSI Expansion Pedestal is offered as a companion pedestal to the SPARCstation, SPARCserver 630MP, and SPARCserver 670MP. The SCSI Expansion Pedestal contains the following items:

Figure 2-1 shows a typical SCSI Expansion Pedestal.

2.1 Internal SCSI Devices

The Sun-approved SCSI controlled peripheral devices available for the SCSI Expansion Pedestal are:

The SCSI Expansion Pedestal contains a maximum of three trays to accommodate the installation of these SCSI controlled peripheral devices. Each peripheral tray measures 36.11 cm (14.21 inches) wide, 12.80 cm (5.04 inches) high (with drives), and 49.55 cm (19.50 inches) deep.

Note - The 2.1 Gbyte differential SCSI disk drive can only be installed in the differential SCSI disk tray for the SCSI Expansion Pedestal.

The number of Sun-approved SCSI controlled peripheral devices allowed within each tray varies depending on the location of the tray inside the SCSI Expansion Cabinet:

2.2 Operating Environment

Avoid temperature extremes and keep the work area clean. Maintain the operating conditions shown below:

Humidity

Operating
(without media) 5% to 95%, noncondensing relative humidity

Nonoperating
(without media) 5% to 95%, noncondensing relative humidity

Operating 20% to 80%, noncondensing relative humidity, maximum
(with media) wet bulb temperature of 25° C

Nonoperating
(with media) 90%, noncondensing @ 40° C

Temperature

Operating
(without media) 10° C to 40° C (50° F to 104° F)

Nonoperating
(without media, shipping) -40° C to 75° C (-40° F to 167° F)
(without media, storage) -40° C to 60° C (-40° F to 140° F)

Operating
(with media) 15° C to 32° C (59° F to 90° F)

Nonoperating
(with media) -20° C to 60° C (-4° F to 140° F)

Altitude
0 to 2,150 meters or 0 to 7,000 feet

Ventilation
Well-ventilated or air-conditioned

The pedestal should be installed in a computer room environment. Computer room installation provides security access to computers and stored information and affords control over environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and airborne dust. Computer room installation also protects equipment from fire, flood, or other danger originating in the building.

Note - For a complete description of all aspects of site preparation, including site selection (floorspace, location, safety, security) and environmental requirements (air conditioning, heating, filtering and vibration), contact your local sales office to order the Sun Site Preparation Guide (P/N 800-5216-xx).

2.3 System Specifications

Following are the system specifications for the pedestal.

2.3.1 Physical Characteristics

The physical characteristics of the SCSI Expansion Pedestal are as follows:

2.3.2 Meeting the Electrical Requirements

Use the information provided in Table 2-1 to identify the pedestal's electrical specifications. You can operate in either of the voltage or frequency ranges shown without using a voltage selection switch. Use a power cord that is appropriate to the voltage and type of power outlet that is required.

Note - The power supply for the SCSI Expansion Pedestal is auto ranging from 90 VAC to 250 VAC. Use the correct power cord to achieve the proper voltage.

Table 2-1 SCSI Expansion Pedestal Voltage Ranges and Frequencies

-----------------------------------
Specification Range -----------------------------------

Operating Voltage Ranges 100-240

Operating Frequency 47-63 Hz

-----------------------------------

Use the Quick Specifications in Table 2-2 to estimate your electrical and air conditioning needs. These are "worst-case" values (maximum number of options, running at full load). Use these values if you are uncertain how heavy a load your users will be placing on the computer equipment and related facilities.
