This chapter describes how to unpack and physically set up the Sun SCSI Expansion Pedestal system.
Warning - Use two or more people to unpack and set up the pedestal. The shipping weight of the unit varies, depending on the number of devices that are shipped within the unit. A typical SCSI Expansion Pedestal weighs over 200 pounds (90.90 kg).
Follow the steps below to inspect and unpack the equipment:
If a shipping carton is damaged, request that the carrier's agent be present when the carton is opened. Keep all of the contents and packing material for the agent's inspection.
The shipping kit will vary from pedestal to pedestal, depending on the configuration you ordered. A basic shipping kit will include the following items:
Note - If the pedestal is damaged or you want to ship the pedestal back for any reason, pack the pedestal by following the unpacking instructions in reverse order.
The rear bumper of the pedestal is shipped unattached and is packaged in the accessory tray.
Follow these steps to attach the rear bumper:

Caution - Do not operate the SCSI Expansion Pedestal without the bumper attached. The bumper encloses the bottom of the pedestal and is designed to allow air to flow through the ventilation slot even when the bumper is placed against a wall.
Caution - Never lift the unit by the external panels - the panels are fastened with ball studs and will pop off under the weight of the machine. Never block any of the ventilation openings or slots on the pedestal.
Caution - Avoid slamming the pedestal against other objects; especially avoid against hard impacts against the side of the pedestal. Avoid rolling the pedestal over rough or uneven surfaces.
Follow these steps to place the system in the work area:
Caution - Once the system is installed, do not move or attempt to move the pedestal with the system power ON. Failure to heed this warning may result in catastrophic disk drive failure. Always power the system OFF fully before moving it.
Caution - Do not operate the pedestal with the wheels removed. The clearance between the wheels and the chassis provides the proper amount of air flow. Removing the wheels can result in serious degradation of system reliability. The system warranty or contract can be void if this requirement is not met.
You are now ready to connect your SCSI Expansion Pedestal to your system. Follow the instructions given in the chapter that pertains to your system:
