1 Introduction

1.1 About This Manual

This manual provides installation instructions for the SCSI Expansion Pedestal. The basic system consists of the system enclosure and the SCSI trays within the enclosure. The manual is divided into the following chapters:

• Introduction - Chapter 1

• System Overview - Chapter 2

• Unpacking the Pedestal - Chapter 3

• Connecting to a SPARCstation - Chapter 4

• Connecting to a SPARCserver 630MP - Chapter 5

• Connecting to a SPARCserver 670MP - Chapter 6

• Powering the System On and Off - Chapter 7

This manual also provides two appendixes:

• Troubleshooting - Appendix A

• Connecting to a SPARCstation (Special Case) - Appendix B

Note - This manual does not cover the installation procedures for internal devices. For information on installing internal devices in your SCSI Expansion Pedestal, refer to the SCSI Expansion Pedestal Service Manual (P/N 800-7286-xx), which is available through your local Sun Sales or Field Service office.

1.2 When You Need Help with UNIX(TM) Commands

This manual does not include specific software commands or procedures. Instead, software tasks are named and you can refer to the operating system documentation that was shipped with your system when you need help with commands or procedures such as:

• Shutting down the system

• Configuring devices

• Other software procedures

Depending on the operating system you are using, you can find descriptions of commands and procedures for installing the pedestal in the following documents:

1.3 Task Map for Getting Your System Running

The diagram below outlines the tasks you can perform to successfully install a new pedestal. Each numbered item in the diagram represents a procedure and the arrows point to manuals in which these procedures are detailed.

After you perform these tasks, you will be ready to use the new pedestal with your system.

1.4 Typographic Conventions

These typographical conventions are used in this document:

• Courier type identifies text that is displayed on the screen:

• Bold type identifies the commands you type at the keyboard:
