4 Installing the VSIMM



This chapter explains how to install an optional video SIMM (VSIMM) in a SPARCstation LX system. Be sure to perform the procedures in Chapter 2, "Preparations" before proceeding with the installation.

Caution -

The VSIMM installed in your SPARCstation LX system must have been specifically designed to operate in it. Do not remove a VSIMM from a different Sun system and install it in a SPARCstation LX system.

Note - The optional VSIMM is not supported, and cannot be installed in SPARCclassic and SPARCclassic X systems.

Inserting the VSIMM

To install the optional VSIMM in a SPARCstation LX system:

    1. Locate the VSIMM slot on the main logic board.

    2. Make sure the wrist strap is securely attached to your wrist and to the metal casing of the power supply.
    3. Remove the VSIMM from its protective packaging and place it on an antistatic surface.

    The bag that the VSIMM is packed in makes a good antistatic surface.

    4. Install the new VSIMM into the VSIMM slot.

    The VSIMM is keyed so it can be installed in one way only. Grasp the VSIMM by its top corners and align it with its connector (see Figure 4-2). Applying equal pressure to both corners, push down the VSIMM until it is firmly seated in its connector.

Warning -

Before powering on your system again, be sure to close up the system unit as described in Chapter 5. It is not safe to operate the system with the system unit opened.
