Display or create views, charts, and metrics: main steps

Diagnostic information that is collected by the WebLogic Diagnostic Framework is displayed in a series of views in the Monitoring Dashboard. Only one view is displayed at a time.

A view can contain one or more charts. A chart contains a viewport, legend, labels, and controls for identifying and displaying metrics. A metric is a run-time MBean property with a numeric or Boolean value that is useful to measure, either as its current value or as it changes over time. A chart can display metrics from one or more MBean instances from one or more servers in the domain.

To display or create a view and add charts and metrics:

  1. Launch the Monitoring Dashboard, if necessary.
  2. To display a view:
    1. Select the View List tab.
    2. Select one of the views that are listed.

The list of available views includes a number of built-in views, which are listed beneath the Built-in Views node of the View List. Built-in views can be displayed, but they cannot be modified, renamed, or deleted. For a complete list of built-in views provided for the Monitoring Dashboard, see Built-In Views.

Beneath the Built-in Views node of the View List is the My Views node, which lists the user-defined, or custom, views. You can create a custom view by copying a built-in view, or from scratch. You can then modify, rename, or delete a custom view as desired. When a view is copied, it contains all the charts, metrics, and property settings of the view from which it was copied.

For more information about displaying or creating views, see Work with views in the Monitoring Dashboard.

  3. To create a view, Select the New View button.

Alternatively, you can Select the View List menu and choose New View.

  4. To create a chart for a custom view, you can do one of the following:
    • Select the view menu and choose New Chart.
    • Drag a metric from the Metric Browser, or from an existing chart, to an empty location in the view.

After the chart is created, Select the chart menu, select Chart Type, and choose the type of chart you want to have for the metrics to display in it. For more information, see Choose the chart type.

For more information about creating charts, see Work with charts in the Monitoring Dashboard. For general information about charts and chart types, see The Parts of a Chart.

  5. To add metric data to a chart, you can do one of the following:
For information about using the Metric Browser to select the specific metric data you want to add to charts, see Work with the Metric Browser. To view details about the metrics that have been added to a chart, see Display summary notes about items in the Monitoring Dashboard. For information about working with metrics and metric data in charts, see Work with metrics in charts.
  6. Start the view, as explained in Start and stop views.
  7. To change the appearance and other properties of an individual chart, see Set individual chart properties.
  8. To change the appearance and other settings of all charts in the Monitoring Dashboard, see Set dashboard preferences.
