Remove the Storage Drive Cage and Motherboard Assembly

Refer to the Sun Server X4-2L Service Manual at https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E36974_01/pdf/E38158.pdf when performing this procedure.

To remove the storage drive cage and motherboard assembly, follow these steps:

  1. Refer to the procedure "Remove the Motherboard Assembly" in the Service Manual on page 144.

Read all Cautions that are documented in the Service Manual for this procedure before performing these steps.

  2. Complete Step 1 through Step 6 in the procedure "Remove the Motherboard Assembly" in the Service Manual.
  3. Remove all of the storage drives from the storage drive cage.

See the procedure "Remove a Storage Drive" on page 49 in the Service Manual.

  4. Disconnect the cables from the storage drive backplane(s).

Disconnect the disk backplane LED cable, the SAS/SATA cable(s), the power cable(s), and the DVD power cable (eight-drive systems only).

    • For eight-drive and twelve-drive systems, see Step 3 in the procedure "Remove the Storage Drive Backplane for Eight-Drive and Twelve-Drive Systems" on page 119 in the Service Manual.

    • For twenty-four drive systems, see Step 3 in the procedure "Remove the Storage Drive Backplane for Twenty-Four Drive Systems" on page 123 in the Service Manual.

  5. Depending on your server's storage drive configuration, do one of the following:
    • If your server is configured with twenty-four 2.5-inch drives, release the disk cage assembly:
      1. Remove the server fan assembly door.

See the procedure "Remove the Fan Assembly Door From a Server With 2.5-Inch Drives" on page 44 in the Service Manual.

      2. Remove the four No. 2 Phillips screws (two on each side of the chassis) that secure the storage drive cage to the server chassis.

Save the four screws. You will need them when you replace the storage drive cage and motherboard assembly.

    • If your server is configured with twelve 3.5-inch drives or eight 2.5-inch drives, release the disk cage assembly:
      1. Remove the six No. 2 Phillips screws (three on each side of the chassis) that secure the storage drive cage to the server chassis.

Save the six screws. You will need them when you replace the storage drive cage and motherboard assembly.

  6. Slide the storage drive cage forward to disengage the standoffs in the base of the chassis and carefully lift the storage drive cage forward and out of the chassis.
  7. Slide the motherboard assembly forward far enough to clear the single clip on the right side of the chassis, then lift the motherboard assembly up and out of the chassis.

See Step 7 in the procedure "Remove the Motherboard Assembly" on page 144 in the Service Manual.

  8. Continue with Step 8 in the procedure "Remove the Motherboard Assembly" on page 144 in the Sun Server X4-2L Service Manual to complete the motherboard removal procedure.
