Provisioning Storage Domains

When logical volumes already exist on a Storage Domain, provisioning the Storage Domain by adding or removing drive groups can cause data migration. Data migration can occur when a drive group that contains a volume is moved to another Storage Domain.
The system notifies you that attempting to perform any of the following actions causes data migration:
  • When moving an existing volume to another Storage Domain, the target Storage Domain must have sufficient capacity for the volume. If sufficient capacity exists, the system migrates the volume data.

  • When moving a drive group from one Storage Domain to another, you must allow the system to migrate all of the volumes off of the source drive group. Then, the drive group can be added to the target Storage Domain.

  • If the drive group contains volumes, when you remove the drive group from the source Storage Domain, then the system migrates the volumes from the drive group to another drive group in the Storage Domain. Ensure that sufficient free capacity exists on the Storage Domain to move the volumes from one drive group to another.

  • When reassigning a drive group that contains part or all of a volume, the existing Storage Domain that contains that drive group must have sufficient free capacity in other drive groups. This free capacity accommodates the loss of the drive group that is being moved to another Storage Domain. When the drive group is moved, the system migrates the volume data onto the remaining drive groups.

  • When you add a drive group to the Storage Domain, you have the option to rebalance the existing volumes in the Storage Domain. Enable rebalance is the default, which maximizes the performance of the existing volumes that might not have sufficient capacity in the drive groups.

Important! The Storage Domain must have sufficient free capacity on the target Storage Domain to hold the entire volume that is being migrated. For a drive group, both the source and target drive groups must have sufficient storage capacity to hold the data that is being migrated.
The system also provides you the following information:
  • A list of the volumes (and their associated repositories) that will require data migration

  • A message indicating whether enough capacity exists to move those volumes into the selected Storage Domain

  • A message indicating whether enough capacity exists for the remaining volumes to reside in an existing Storage Domain
