Drilling describes a function on a report where certain attributes in the report can be clicked on to view the same information at a different level.
Drilling can be done to view more details (drilling down), fewer details but more grouping (drilling up), or across attributes, some metrics, custom groups, and consolidations displayed in a report.
For example, a report with results organized by countries and stores displays sales by Country. Click on a country to drill down from the country level to see the sales for the regions that make up that country. Alternately, click on a store to drill up from stores to view sales for the cities where those stores are located.
Drilling ability is defined by the relationship between attributes. Country is the parent of Region which allows the drill down from Country to Region. Region is the child of Country, which allows the drill up from Region to Country. Region is the parent of City, City is the child of Region and the parent of Store, and Store is the child of City.
