Minimum Supported Oracle 6.4 TB NVMe SSD v2 Firmware Version

Oracle 6.4 TB NVMe SSD v2s run with the minimum required firmware package listed in the following table.

Firmware
Minimum Required Drive Firmware Version
Recommended Drive Firmware Version
Oracle 6.4 TB NVMe SSD v2 Package
F640 v2 - FIRMWARE 8DV1RL02
Patch 30507388: 6.4TB v2 NVME PCIE SSD RL02 FW
F640 v2 - FIRMWARE 8DV1RL04
Patch 31171203: 6.4TB v2 NVME PCIE SSD RL04 FW

If you install Oracle 6.4 TB NVMe SSD v2s as an add-on option, you must update the firmware if the release number is lower than 8DV1RL04.

Note -  For best practice, install the latest device firmware versions.

Summary of Changes in Firmware 8DV1RL04 Release

The following improvements or changes were included in firmware 8DV1RL04 release of Oracle 6.4 TB NVMe SSD v2s:

  • Update to Patch 31171203: 6.4TB v2 NVME PCIE SSD RL04 FW or a subsequent release if available.

  • RL04 Maintenance Release Bug Fixes

    • 30408506: SFF drop in random write performance.

    • 30349657: NVME Audit failing for 4/16 Intel devices with excessive media errors.

    • 29754318: vdbench BAD_READ errors seen on E2 with Intel NVMe SFF.

    • Relaxed Ordering: Relax Ordering bit is incorrectly set in MSIX and NVMe command completion packets.

    • Firmware downgrade counter enabling: Enable firmware downgrade counter for Oracle SKUs.

    • Deadlock Fix: Fix to prevent BDR/Read Disturb host command collisions leading to deadlock.

    • ASSERT_SR003: Added check to verify if the offset for accessing event dumps is correct and also if the context is loaded before accessing any event dumps.

    • Health Status Fix: Controller Health Status poll returns incorrect values after reset for some of the values.

    • Loss of enumeration after NVMe Reset: Drive might temporarily lose enumeration to the host system if host initiates safe shutdown within ~100ms of coming out of NVMe Reset. (during transition of CC.EN from 0 to 1)

    • De-enumeration after firmware update without reset: Drive might de-enumerate from the host platform if firmware update without reset is quickly (within ~1s) followed by Function Level Reset (FLR).

    • Incorrect response to NVMe MI full command: Drive might send out incorrect response if an NVMe MI Full command (commands that are not part of NVMe MI 1.0 specification Appendix A) is quickly followed by abort command by the host system.

    • setFeature Temp Threshold fix: setFeature Temperature Threshold persistent across controller reset, expected behavior is for temperature threshold to be non-persistent over reset.

    • Critical Warning Bit: Critical Warning bit clears prematurely to 0x0 from 0x2 while the composite temperature reads 71C.

Summary of Changes in Firmware 8DV1RL02 Release

The following improvements or changes were included in firmware 8DV1RL02 release of Oracle 6.4 TB NVMe SSD v2s:

  • Update to Patch 30507388: 6.4TB v2 NVME PCIE SSD RL02 FW or a subsequent release if available.

  • RL02 Maintenance Release Bug Fixes

    • 28843949: Rejects Identify Controller with NSID=0xFFFFFFFF, required for SPARC

    • 28844001: SFF LED off during driver unbind. See Green OK/Activity LED Not Illuminated on New NVMe Storage Drives

Note -  Even if drive comes in new with RL02, and you do not see the LED on at idle, you must force a firmware upgrade to RL02.

      RL02 firmware upgrade instructions:

      1. Download and unpack the file to the system (or an available NFS share).

      2. Run fwupdate list controller to view the details for NVME3, which should be c2.

      3. Before updating device firmware, ensure that the device is quiesced

      4. Update the device with this command: fwupdate update nvme-controller-firmware -n c2 -f <full path to firmware file - ICRPC2DD2.RL02.fw>

      5. Shutdown the OS and the system (stop /SYS)

      6. Power up (start /SYS)

      7. Boot the OS, and verify all looks good with fwupdate list controller

      8. Check LED status of the reloaded device.

  • If you install Oracle 6.4 TB NVMe SSD v2s as an add-on option, you must update the firmware if the release number is lower than 8DV1RL02.
