Customize Prebuilt Subject Areas Using Semantic Model Extensions
Use this guide to make custom data available in NetSuite Analytics Warehouse and add it to a prebuilt subject area with Semantic Model Extensions (SME).
Select a Data Preparation Method
Use this reference to choose how to make required data available before you customize a subject area with Semantic Model Extensions (SME).
-
If you need a custom field or supplemental field from an existing dimension, use the custom field mapping and transfer workflow in Data Transfer Setup. See Transferring Custom and Supplemental Fields to NetSuite Analytics Warehouse.
Data Transfer supports the prebuilt NetSuite and Salesforce data models only.
-
If you need fields from a custom record or supplemental record that is not in the prebuilt data model, use the Dataset augmentation type. For complex modeling, use Dataset augmentation before SME. See Augment Your Data.
Data Augmentation supports prebuilt NetSuite and Salesforce connections, and active connections that use a Data Augmentation connector.
-
If the required data is available in the NetSuite Analytics Warehouse, use SME. Define joins, extend the logical model, and expose elements in one or more subject areas. See Extend the Semantic Model Using the Sandbox Framework.
Customize a Prebuilt Subject Area
Use this workflow to customize a prebuilt subject area with Semantic Model Extensions (SME).
First, determine whether the data that you need is already available in the prebuilt data model.
-
Complete one applicable data-preparation task:
-
If you need a custom field or supplemental field from an existing prebuilt dimension, transfer the field by using the Custom Fields or Supplemental Fields tab on the Data Transfer Setup page. See Transferring Custom and Supplemental Fields to NetSuite Analytics Warehouse.
-
If you need data from a custom record or supplemental record that isn't in the prebuilt data model, create a Dataset augmentation type. Run the initial load before you use the dataset in SME. See Augment Your Data.
-
If the required data is already available in the prebuilt data model, skip this step and begin with step 2.
-
-
Create a customization sandbox. Use the sandbox to develop and validate changes without directly modifying Oracle-delivered content. See Create a Sandbox.
-
Edit the applicable logical star and fact. Add or modify the model extensions that the subject area requires. See Edit a Logical Star.
-
If the transferred or augmented data must join an existing dimension, extend that prebuilt dimension. See Extend Dimension.
-
Modify the subject area to expose the required elements to report authors. You can add, remove, rename, or reorder dimensions, measures, folders, and other elements. See Modify Subject Area and Manage Subject Areas.
-
Validate join keys, relationship cardinality, data grain, unmatched-row behavior, and query results. See Recommendations and Tips to Extend the Semantic Model.
-
Validate the customization sandbox and resolve reported errors. See Validate Sandbox and View Validation Report.
-
Apply the completed changes. See Apply Changes.
-
Publish the sandbox. Then verify that the customized elements are available in the associated subject area. See Publish Model.
