Classification Research: Setup and Process

This section discusses the additional elements which can be set up to support classification research and the process you can follow to perform searches on product classification information. To use the classification research functionality, GTM uses the basic product classification data plus:

  • Service preference

The basic setup elements were discussed previously so let’s look at setting up a service preference for classification research.

Classification Research Service Preference Setup

Service preference enables you to specify details regarding how GTM should perform classification research. Within the Service Preference Details section, you specify a service with a corresponding service preference configuration. You can have multiple combinations of the service and service preference configuration.

Navigate to Master Data > Power Data > Configurations > Service Preference.

In this example, you specify a service of Classify Item.

When you are adding or editing a service preference detail line, click the icon to the right of the service preference configuration field to add additional detail.

When you are editing a service of Classify Item and click the icon to the right of Service Preference Configuration, GTM displays the Service Preference Configuration: CLASSIFY ITEM page. On this page:

  • Language ID is the language of the description of potential lookup classifications.
  • Match Factor is used to determine which classification is a potential match to the description you enter. Entering a Match Factor of 1.0 means the description must be an exact match. For values that are less than 1.0, the algorithm assigns a decimal value indicating how close the match is. You can use the match factor to tune your lookup results.
  • Maximum Matches only returns the top classify item results sorted by match factor. For example, a Maximum Matches of 100 indicates that only the top 100 matches are returned by GTM.

When you perform a classify item, you can specify a service preference.

Note: Service Preference is not a required field when performing classification research.

Classification Research Process – Query Page

Now that you have setup the basic data and the service preference in GTM, you can lookup details of product classification codes using Classification Research. To look up existing product classification codes, navigate to:

  • Classification > Classification Research

The classification research page enables you to look up existing classification information in GTM. You must specify a product classification type and then specify either a product classification code or a description. If both are specified, GTM only uses the product classification code when performing the search. You can also specify:

  • Language, which is required, corresponds to the language available in the product classification code. Usually the languages available are based on the languages in which the tariff is published.
  • Reference information such as source system or service preference.
  • Select the Tree Results check box to see the results in a tree view.

For example, you have specified a:

  • Product Classification Type of HTS US
  • Description of AMMUNITION
  • Language of ENGLISH

Once you click Match at the bottom of the page, GTM conducts the search based on the criteria defined and returns the Product Classification Lookup results page which is discussed below.

Classification Research Process – Results Page Grid View

You can see the Classification Research results page based on the criteria entered previously. You can see the search criteria you entered by clicking the Search Criteria button. For example, you can see the search criteria as:

  • Product Classification Type of HTS US
  • Description of AMMUNITION
  • Tree Results of false which means a grid view is displayed

At the bottom of the page, you can see:

  • The default results page is a grid view.
  • The product classification codes for a product classification type of HTS US containing the word ‘ammunition’.
  • GTM highlights each instance of the word ‘ammunition’ in yellow.

Note:There are multiple pages of results for the query previously defined.

Classification Research Process – Results Page Tree View

If you want to see the tree view, you can follow the same instructions as in the Classification Research Process – Query Page above but select the Tree Results check box. If you are on the Classification Research Results Page – Grid View, click the up/down arrow to the left of the product classification code on the results page.

You can see the tree view for the same data discussed previously. Specifically, this is the tree view for a product classification type of HTS US containing the word AMMUNITION.

  • In the tree view, you can see the hierarchy of the HTS US codes. This hierarchy is defined using the product classification hierarchy code.
  • GTM highlighted each instance of ‘ammunition’ in yellow.
  • All the results are shown on one page which you can scroll through.
