Preparing to Install BEA SNMP Agent

The following sections provide information that you need to know before installing the BEA SNMP Agent software

About BEA SNMP Agent

BEA SNMP Agent is a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) agent product that enables BEA Tuxedo and BEA WebLogic Enterprise applications to be managed from a centralized enterprise management console. BEA SNMP Agent version 2.1 enables an enterprise management console to manage Tuxedo 6.4, Tuxedo 6.5, Tuxedo 7.1, WebLogic Enterprise 4.2, and WebLogic Enterprise 5.1 applications. BEA SNMP Agent version 2.1.1 enables an enterprise management console to manage Tuxedo 8.0 applications.

BEA SNMP Agent Installation Methods

The BEA SNMP Agent installation program provides two installation methods:

BEA SNMP Agent Distribution Methods

The BEA SNMP Agent 2.1 product is distributed on both the Web and CD-ROM. The BEA SNMP Agent 2.1.1 product is distributed only on the Web.

Web Distribution

BEA SNMP Agent is distributed on the Web as a .zip archive file for a Windows installation, and as a .tar archive file for a UNIX installation. Platform-specific installation files for BEA SNMP Agent 2.1 and 2.1.1 are available for download from the BEA corporate Web site at http://commerce.bea.com/downloads/tuxedo.jsp.

When downloading BEA SNMP Agent 2.1, you must also download an evaluation license, which allows you to use the BEA SNMP Agent 2.1 software for a 30-day trial period. Anytime during the 30-day trial period you may purchase a permanent license for your BEA SNMP Agent product by calling or e-mailing BEA Customer Support. The contact information for BEA Customer Support in North America is as follows:

Contact information for additional locations may be found at http://www.bea.com/support/contact_cs.html.

When downloading BEA SNMP Agent 2.1.1, you do not download an evaluation license because there is no license for BEA SNMP Agent 2.1.1. The only license required is a valid BEA Tuxedo 8.0 license on the host Windows or UNIX system.

CD-ROM Distribution

If you purchased BEA SNMP Agent 2.1 from your local sales representative, you will find the following items in the BEA SNMP Agent product box:

You can also access BEA SNMP Agent online documentation, updated with BEA SNMP Agent 2.1.1 information, at ../index.html.

BEA SNMP Agent Software Components

BEA SNMP Agent consists of two high-level components:

The executable files include commands, utilities, and the BEA SNMP Agent Integrator and SNMP agent executables. The configuration files include the BEA SNMP Agent configuration files, SNMP management information base (MIB) files, and other miscellaneous files.

You will be prompted during the installation to choose an installation directory for the BEA SNMP Agent files. After you choose the installation directory, the BEA SNMP Agent installation program will install the BEA SNMP Agent executable files in the installation_directory/bin directory, and the configuration files in the installation_directory/etc directory. See the following figure for clarification.

Note: The BEA SNMP Agent 2.1 CD includes online documentation in its doc directory.

Hardware and Software Prerequisites

You must install the BEA SNMP Agent software on each master node (machine) of each Tuxedo/WLE domain that will be participating in the SNMP management system. For more information about Tuxedo/WLE domains, visit the BEA Tuxedo/WLE online documentation set at http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/index.html.

To access managed objects that are only accessible locally, you must also install the BEA SNMP Agent software on each domain's non-master node where those resources reside, or execute the SNMP agents on the master node with the -c option, which enables the SNMP agents on the master node to gather information from all machines involved in the domain. For more information about SNMP agents and the -c option, see "Setting Up BEA SNMP Agent on a Managed Node" in the BEA SNMP Agent Administration Guide.

To manage multiple Tuxedo or WLE domains on a node, you must run the following BEA SNMP Agent processes on the node: the BEA SNMP Agent Integrator and one SNMP agent—started as an SNMP multiplexing (SMUX) subagent—for each domain that you want to manage. For more information, see "Setting Up the BEA SNMP Agent Integrator" in the BEA SNMP Agent Administration Guide.

System Requirements

For a Windows host system, either BEA SNMP Agent 2.1 or BEA SNMP Agent 2.1.1 (but not both) may be installed and running on the same node. For a UNIX host system, both BEA SNMP Agent 2.1 and BEA SNMP Agent 2.1.1 may be installed and running on the same node. For more information about multiple BEA SNMP Agent products running on the same node, see "Setting Up the BEA SNMP Agent Integrator" in the BEA SNMP Agent Administration Guide.

System Requirements for BEA SNMP Agent 2.1

The system and software installation requirements for the node on which the BEA SNMP Agent 2.1 software will be loaded are given in the following table.
