3 Installing the GT SBus Adapter Board in a SPARCstation 2

This chapter describes how to install the GT SBus Adapter Board into a SPARCstation 2.

Installation Summary

Installation of the GT SBus Adapter Board requires about 30 minutes. The following is an overview of the installation steps:

-------------------------------------------------
Remove the System Unit Top Cover page 16 Attach the Wrist Strap page 17 Remove the Existing Frame Buffer Board page 18 Remove the Rear Panel Filler Plate page 20 Install the GT SBus Adapter Board page 21 Replace the System Unit Top Cover page 23 What's Next page 24 -------------------------------------------------

Remove the System Unit Top Cover

Referring to Figure 3-1, remove the system unit top cover as follows:

    1. Make sure that the system unit power is off.
    2. Place the system unit on a work table or bench.

    3. Remove the two screws holding the top cover to the back panel.

    See Figure 3-1.

    4. Grasp the sides of the cover from the rear and tilt the cover until the protector loop clears the chassis.
    5. Gently push the cover forward about one-half inch (13mm) so that the plastic tabs clear the chassis.
    6. Remove the cover by lifting vertically.

Caution -

The plastic tabs at the bottom of the cover are fragile. Be sure the tabs clear the chassis before removing the cover.

Attach the Wrist Strap

The anti-static wrist strap, provided with the GT Graphics Subsystem, provides grounding between your body and the system unit chassis. Boards and modules can be damaged by harmful electrical charges if you do not wear the wrist strap. The wrist strap must be attached to your wrist and to the chassis before handling any of the system unit boards.

To attach the wrist strap:

    1. Wrap the anti-static strap with the conductive adhesive tape twice around your wrist.

Make sure the adhesive side is against your skin.

    2. Peel the liner from the copper foil at the opposite end of the wrist strap.

Attach this adhesive copper strip to the metal case of the power supply in the system unit.

Remove the Existing Frame Buffer Board

Note - Normally, the SPARCstation is shipped without any frame buffer board installed. If your system was shipped with a frame buffer board, the board must be removed before proceeding with the installation.

Remove the frame buffer board, as follows:

Caution -

Attach the anti-static wrist strap before attempting this operation. See "Attach the Wrist Strap" on page 17.

    1. Identify the frame buffer board.

The frame buffer board is most likely installed in SBus slot 1 or 2. See Figure 3-3. This board will have a monitor connector protruding through the system unit rear panel.

Figure 3-3 Locate the GX or Frame Buffer Board

    2. Place the anti-static mat (provided with the GT Graphics Subsystem), shiny side down, next to the system unit.
    3. Gently pull up on the SBus-connector-end of the board to unseat it from the SBus connector.
    4. Slide the board at an angle out of the system unit back panel.

Make sure that the board mounting plate unhooks from the slots on the system unit back panel.

    5. Place the board on the anti-static mat.

When you are through installing the GT SBus Adapter Board, you can place the unused GX or frame buffer board in the anti-static envelope that the GT SBus Adapter Board came in.

Proceed to "Install the GT SBus Adapter Board" on page 21.

Remove the Rear Panel Filler Plate

If you are upgrading an existing SPARCstation, you will not have to perform this step. Proceed to "Install the GT SBus Adapter Board" on page 21.

If this is not an upgrade, remove the rear panel filler plate from one of the SBus slots from the inner surface of the back panel of your system unit, as shown in Figure 3-4. The GT SBus Adapter Board will work in any one of the three slots (see the note below).

Caution -

The installation procedures above and on the following two pages assume that you are installing the GT SBus Adapter Board into a SPARCstation 2. If you are installing the GT SBus Adapter Board into a SPARCstation 1 or 1+ (an unsupported configuration), you must install the board only into SBus slot 1 or 2.

If you install the GT SBus Adapter board into slot 3 of a SPARCstation 1 or 1+, the SPARCstation CPU motherboard may be permanently damaged.

Install the GT SBus Adapter Board

Caution -

The installation procedures below assume that you are installing the GT SBus Adapter Board into a SPARCstation 2 (the only currently-accepted configuration). If you are installing the GT SBus Adapter Board into a SPARCstation 1 or 1+ (an unsupported configuration), you must install the board only into SBus slot 1 or 2.

    1. Locate the SBus slots.

See Figure 3-5. The GT SBus Adapter Board may be installed into any one of the three slots, with the exception noted above.

    2. Remove the GT SBus Adapter Board from the anti-static envelope.

Figure 3-5 Install the GT SBus Adapter Board Into One of the Three SBus Slots

    3. Slide the GT SBus Adapter Board at an angle into the system unit back panel.

Make sure that the mounting plate on the GT SBus Adapter Board hooks into the slot on the system unit back panel. The mounting slots are above the rectangular openings in the back of the panel. See Figure 3-6.

    4. Align the plug with the socket and gently press the plug into the socket.

    See Figure 3-6.

Caution -

Using excessive force may bend or damage the pins. Do not press on the center of the plastic board retainer or it may break.

Figure 3-6 Align the Plug with the Socket

    5. You may now remove the anti-static wrist strap.

Replace the System Unit Top Cover

Replace the system unit top cover as follows:

Caution -

Holding the cover at angles greater than 30 degrees can prevent insertion of the tabs into the tab slots. Once the tabs are in the slots, raising the cover to angles greater than 30 degrees can break the tabs.

    1. Align the cover to the chassis.

Hold the cover at an angle of 30 degrees relative to the chassis and gently guide the plastic tabs on the cover into the tab slots on the front of the chassis. Continue to hold the cover with your hands. See Figure 3-7.

Figure 3-7 Replace the System Unit Top Cover

    2. Lower the cover onto the chassis

Slowly lower the cover onto the chassis making sure that the protector loop clears the disk drive and seats into the protector loop slot on the bottom of the chassis.

    3. Push down on the cover's right and left sides.
    4. Insert and tighten the two screws that hold the top cover to the back panel.

Tighten the two screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

Warning -

Do not power-up the system unit without replacing the cover and securing it. Failure to take this precaution may result in personal injury and system damage.
