Gift with purchase promotions are a special promotion type that allows you to give customers a free item as part of their order.
Free gift criteria can be specified as any of the following asset types:
SKU
Product
Category
Content group
SKU bundles cannot be used as gift items.
When a customer’s order qualifies for the gift with purchase promotion, one of two things can happen:
If no item in the cart meets the gift item criteria and the promotion does not provide any gift selection choices, the gift item is automatically added to the cart. If the promotion does provide choices, a placeholder is automatically added to the cart, and the customer can select their gift later. Whether added automatically or selected, these gift items cannot be used to qualify for any other promotions.
If the gift item is already in the customer’s cart, the item is repriced to be free. These manually-added items could have been used to qualify for other promotions, but once they are repriced, they can no longer do so.
Keep in mind that if you offer multiple potential items as gifts, your store pages must be coded to include a way for the customer to select a gift. See the Guide to Setting Up a Store for information and examples.
If a customer changes their order so it no longer qualifies for the promotion, you can configure the behavior per promotion using the Auto-Remove from Cart setting. If Auto-Remove from Cart is set to Yes, gift items that were automatically added to the cart (or selected from an automatically-provided option) are automatically removed if the cart no longer qualifies. If Auto-Remove from Cart is set to No, gift items that were automatically added are repriced at their usual price.
Items that were manually added to the cart are always repriced at their normal price, and are never removed.
