Understanding Fluid Business Objectives

Fluid Business Objectives modernizes the Business Objectives functionality, providing a refreshing and intuitive user experience for creating, managing, and viewing business objectives in the system.

The Business Objectives functionality provides organizations the ability to create and publish company objectives, display them in an organization chart view, and tie employee goals to the goals and initiatives of departments, business units, and ultimately to the overall organizational strategy.

The process of setting up business objectives is similar to the setup for performance documents. It includes the definition of objective plans that specify the time period and hierarchy method, objective sections, and objective templates. These definitions are used in creating business objective documents for departments or positions.

The fluid version of Business Objectives delivers:

  • A modern user interface to enhance the user experience in working with business objectives. The new design includes:

    • A redesigned document concept and layout that is optimized for any device.

    • The More Actions menu in multiple locations of the business objective document to provide relevant user actions where they are needed.

  • Ability for managers to create, manage, and view business objectives of which they are the owner or editor.

    See Business Objectives Tile.

  • Ability for employees to view published business objectives from their direct managers, and also from their organizational hierarchy.

    See View Business Objectives Tile.

Fluid Business Objectives does not contain pages for administrator tasks, which include, but not limited to, set up templates, publish objectives, cascade objectives to performance document, manage objective statuses, and so on. Administrators continue to access existing pages for these tasks using the Global Search bar or the Menu tile in the NavBar.

For more information about administrator tasks for the Business Objectives functionality, refer to the topics in the Setting Up Business Objectives and Performing Administrative Tasks chapters of the PeopleSoft HCM: ePerformance product documentation.

We use these terms as needed in this product documentation to refer to the supported versions, Fluid Business Objectives and Classic Business Objectives.

Note: Both versions support the same business objective process flow and functionality in general, for that we use the same document content. Any differences in behavior between these versions will be identified using these terms wherever appropriate.

  • Fluid Business Objectives – in this version, both document lists as well as pages used for creating, managing, and viewing business objectives are completely redesigned in Fluid for managers and employees (view access for employees only).

Users with the Fluid Dashboard - MSS ePerf role (for managers) or the Fluid Dashboard - ESS ePerf role (for employees) have access to the Fluid Business Objectives functionality.

  • Classic Business Objectives – in this version, pages used for creating, managing, and viewing business objectives are displayed in Classic Plus mode.

Note: This is the version available for use if the Fluid Business Objectives functionality is not applied to the system.

Fluid Business Objectives uses the same installation and setup pages (for example, section and template definitions) as Classic Business Objectives. New, fluid-only options are also added on these pages for Fluid Business Objectives. For options that apply only to one version but not both, they will be stated properly in corresponding topics.

The system delivers lists of actions for the More Actions menu used in different locations of a document on the Fluid Popup Menu Setup Page page. For more information about the More Actions menu, see Understanding the More Actions Menu.

Here are a few points to keep in mind as you plan to uptake Fluid Business Objectives:

  • Consider switching over to Fluid Business Objectives after the conclusion of a review period rather than in the middle of the review cycle if possible.

  • To avoid unexpected system behavior, do not switch back to Classic Business Objectives after Fluid Business Objectives is applied.

  • To ensure that the system works properly, both managers and employees should be switched to using Fluid Business Objectives.

  • Create new document templates if you wish to leverage the configurable sub-item label that is introduced in Fluid Business Objectives.
