Oracle VM Manager tracks the different running states for each Oracle VM Server at regular intervals. At any point, it is possible to check the running state for any Oracle VM Server within the Oracle VM Manager Web Interface or the Oracle VM Manager Command Line Interface. There are five different running states that apply to Oracle VM Servers. The following list describes each running state and the scenarios that apply to each of these:
STARTING:
This is the initial state that is set for an Oracle VM Server when it is started via Oracle VM Manager.
This is also the state that is set for an Oracle VM Server very early in the discovery process. Once the discovery is finished, the state is updated and set to RUNNING.
RUNNING:
This is the state that is set for an Oracle VM Server when it is running and the Oracle VM Manager instance is able to authenticate and communicate with the Oracle VM Agent on the server.
This state is set at the end of a successful Oracle VM Server discovery operation.
STOPPING:
When an attempt is made to stop, restart or kill an Oracle VM Server, it is immediately set into the STOPPING state.
STOPPED:
When an Oracle VM Server cannot be contacted for an extended period of time it first receives a DISCONNECT event and eventually an OFFLINE event and its state is set to STOPPED.
UNKNOWN:
An Oracle VM Server is only ever set to the UNKNOWN state if the Oracle VM Manager instance does not own it, or the last authentication attempt against it failed.
