Ways to Award Digital Badges
Digital badges can be issued both manually and automatically.
- Manually: By administrators on the Give a Badge page, or by managers as part of a recognition.
- Automatically: By running the badge assignment application engine (AE) process from the Run Digital Badge Assignment page, or through event processing.
This table describes the available methods, who can initiate badge awards, where badges are awarded, and other relevant details.
| Award Method | Initiated By | Awarded From | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|
|
Manual |
Administrator |
If the criteria type is Select Recipients, badges are awarded instantly upon submission. For other criteria types, badges are awarded using the AE process. |

New Recognition Page (give a badge as part of a recognition) |
Badges used for recognitions must be set up to match a recognition category, or both a category and impact. To award a badge as part of a recognition, a category must be selected in the recognition. |

Run Digital Badge Assignment Page (run control / badge assignment) |
Use this run control page to run the AE process to assign digital badges. Only App Class and Query criteria types are supported on this page. Note: Badges given through this method are classified as system-awarded. |
| Automatic | Event-driven |
N/A |
The system delivers event processing for the Person Profile badge category. When enabled (including activation of required event handlers), this event processing setup can award digital badges based on updates to a person's profile (for example, when an Honors and Awards item is added). Note: Badges given through this method are classified as system-awarded. |
Automatic Digital Badge Assignment Process
The system provides an AE process, BDG_ASSIGN, that can automatically award badges to recipients in bulk. This process can be launched from two locations:
-
Run Digital Badge Assignment page: Administrators can run the process on demand or schedule it to run regularly using Process Scheduler—useful for recurring activities such as service anniversaries.
-
Give a Badge page: This process is used to award badges for all criteria types except Select Recipients.
After the process completes, administrators can review the message log and trace details in Process Monitor to view results, including the number of employees awarded and a list of employee IDs.
