Use Cases: Extend the Semantic Model Using the Sandbox Framework

These uses cases show you how to extend the semantic model using the Sandbox framework.

The use cases assume that you have created a sandbox, for example titled MySandbox5Mar25.

Task	Action
1. Extend a Conformed Dimension	Add attribute columns to an Dimension folder such as Customer, Item Category, and Time.
2. Extend a Degenerate Dimension	Add attribute columns to Transaction Details such as Dim - OM Sales Order Details. Folder names mostly end in Details.
3. Add Custom Dimension (to a prebuilt fact)	Create a new folder containing dimensional attribute columns.
4. Add a Custom Fact (join to prebuilt dimensions)	Create a new folder containing fact measure columns.
5. Add a Custom Fact (containing both attributes and measures)	Create two folders, one containing fact measure columns and another containing dimension attribute columns.
6. Add Derived Columns	Add a calculated column to a folder.
7. Create Custom Dimension with Hierarchy	Add workbook that can expand and collapse to dimension attributes.
8. Create Custom Subject Area – Based on Existing One	Create a subject area to either: Reuse elements from an existing subject area Refine or clean up an existing subject area
9. Create a Subject Area – Add Custom Fact and Custom Dimension	Create an empty subject area with all custom elements (examples Salesforce, Quickbooks, Google Analytics subject areas.)
