Learning Path Renewals
Configure renewal rules for learning paths, extending renewal capabilities previously available for courses and self-paced learning. When a learning path renews, learners get a new assignment based on the current learning path structure and complete the required activities again. Each renewal starts a new fulfillment cycle, so only valid completions earned on or after the renewal assignment start date count toward completing the renewed activities.

How existing completions are evaluated
An existing activity completion satisfies a renewed learning path only when it's for the same activity, remains valid, and is earned on or after the renewal assignment start date. This example shows how these rules are applied.
The Information Security learning path contains these activities and renews on July 1, 2026

| Activity in renewal assignment | Completed | Satisfies the learning path renewal completion requirements ? | Explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Information Security Fundamentals |
June 15, 2026, before the learning path renewal assignment started |
No | The completion is for the same activity and remains valid, but it was earned before the new fulfillment cycle began. So the learner needs to complete the activity again to fulfill the learning path's completion requirements. |
|
Social Engineering |
July 5, 2026 Expires Oct 5, 2026, after the renewal assignment started |
Yes As long as the completion of the other learning path activities is done before Oct 5, 2026 |
The completion is for the same activity, was earned during the renewal cycle, and is valid until October 5, 2026. If the learner doesn't complete the learning path before October 5, 2026, this activity completion expires and they need to complete the activity again to satisfy the learning path requirement. |

Cybersecurity |
July 10, 2026, after the renewal assignment started |
Yes | This completion is for the same activity and was earned during the renewal cycle, so it remains valid. |
How renewal affects existing activity assignments
When a renewal period begins, the app reevaluates activity statuses and associates them with existing active assignments as appropriate. For future-dated renewal periods, reevaluation doesn't occur until the renewal period starts.
| Renewal period status | When activity statuses are reevaluated | What can happen after reevaluation |
|---|---|---|
| Renewal period begins or is in progress | When the renewal period reaches its start date and during the active renewal period | Activities are reevaluated and can be associated with existing active assignments as appropriate. |
| Renewal period is future-dated | Re-evaluation is deferred; it doesn’t occur before the renewal period begins. | No activity association occurs through renewal reevaluation while the period remains future-dated. |
Business benefit: Keep recurring learning programs current by automatically assigning learners the most recent version of a learning path on a defined renewal cadence. A consistent renewal model across learning paths, courses, and self-paced learning simplifies administration while helping ensure learners complete required learning again when renewals occur.
Steps to enable and configure
- Enable Redwood experience for managing learning paths.
- Enable Redwood experience for assignment management
- Configure renewal rules for the learning path or on the learning assignment profile.
Tips and considerations
- For an initial learning path assignment, existing behavior remains unchanged. A prior valid completion of the same activity can satisfy the activity requirement, even if the completion occurred before the learning path was assigned or outside the learning path.
- If an activity has a future renewal period, learners are informed when the renewal period starts and can't access the activity until that date.
- A learning path is completed after all required activities are satisfied. If an activity completion later expires, the learning path remains completed unless the completion is manually reversed.
- Standalone event activities don't generate new assignments during learning path renewal because events don't support renewal. Instead, continue using the existing event assignment.
