8 Menu Item Linking

Restaurant Operations uses menu item links to ensure that sales recorded in the Point-of-Sale (POS) system reduce the on-hand quantity of the appropriate inventory items.

A POS menu item can be linked to multiple inventory items or recipes. You can also configure up to ten price levels to account for different ways an item is sold.

For example, a restaurant might use one french fries recipe for a small serving but sell both small and large servings. If a large serving contains twice the quantity of a small serving, you can configure the link ratio so that selling one large serving depletes two portions of the small-serving recipe.

You can also use POS order types to determine which inventory items and recipes are depleted. For example, a takeaway coffee can deplete coffee, a paper cup, and a lid, while an dine-in coffee can deplete only the coffee recipe without the disposable packaging.

The appropriate menu item linking method depends on how your recipes, price levels, and order types are configured.
