Estimating Compensation

Sales representatives or managers can estimate compensation on one or more opportunities. To estimate compensation, the application treats opportunities in the same way as orders. However, unlike order line-item status, opportunities can have revenue line items represented in various currencies. This leads to two possible scenarios:

  • Transaction level rule. Estimated compensation is based on the single revenue figure listed for the parent opportunity (ignoring information in opportunity revenue line items).
  • Transaction-detail level rule. Estimated compensation is based on the line items and not the parent opportunity revenue figure. In this case, an extra conversion must take place to convert the various revenue line items into the common, parent opportunity currency.

NOTE:  Opportunity revenue line items may not add up to the single revenue figure listed for the opportunity as a whole.

In both cases, the following actions occur:

  • The opportunity currency is converted into the plan currency.
  • This figure is measured against the rules and performance measures to determine if compensation is earned. If so, the calculation engine converts compensation amounts into the representative's compensation currency.

NOTE:  The exchange date used is the current date (the date the representative clicks the Estimate Compensation button) or the most recent date preceding the current date for which an exchange rate is available.

The result is identical to the result achieved after calculating compensation on an order: a compensation figure is determined in the representative's compensation currency and appears in the Estimated Compensation field.
