Validating Sales Hierarchy Components

You should validate the sales hierarchy components—version, territories, territory positions and crediting rules—before submitting them for approval. Validation helps verify that the territories, positions and crediting rules are properly created and meet certain criteria.

Validating a Sales Hierarchy Version

Use the following procedure to validate a sales hierarchy version before submitting the hierarchy version for approval. Sales Hierarchy Version validation automatically validates defined territories within the hierarchy version. You can also validate each territory separately.

To validate a sales hierarchy version

  1. From the application-level menu, choose View > Site Map > Incentive Compensation Sales Hierarchies Administration > Sales Hierarchy Explorer > Sales Hierarchy Versions.
  2. In the Explorer, select and expand the Sales Hierarchy.
  3. Click the Sales Hierarchy Versions folder, and then in the Versions list, select the version.
  4. In the Sales Hierarchy Versions list, click the menu button and choose Validate Record.

The validation verifies the following conditions:

    • The sales hierarchy version has only one root territory.
    • The territory is only referenced one time in the version.
    • The referenced territory is within the same category.
    • All territories are approved if the version is approved.

Validating a New Territory Position and Crediting Rule

If an a territory, territory position, and crediting rule are added after the sales hierarchy version is validated, you can validate the territory position and credit rule separately, or validate the territory again after adding the territory positions and crediting rule. Positions and crediting rules should be submitted before validation.

To separately validate a territory position

  1. From the application-level menu, choose View > Site Map > Incentive Compensation Sales Hierarchies Administration > Territories.
  2. In the Territory list, select the new territory.
  3. Click the Positions view tab, and in the Positions list, add the new position.

You can add a number of positions with different roles. For more information, see Adding a Position to a Territory.

  4. In the Positions record, select Submitted in the Status field.
  5. In the Positions list, select the submitted (or approved) territory position, click the menu button, and choose validate.

Only submitted or approved positions can be validated. You can approve a submitted territory position by selecting Approved in the Status field.

The validation verifies the following conditions:

    • Start and end dates are within the effective period of the parent territory.
    • If the territory is approved, it has an effective owner at any given time during the effective period of the territory.
    • The Owner does not have the role of Other during the effective period of the territory.

To separately validate a crediting rule

  1. From the application-level menu, choose View > Site Map > Incentive Compensation Sales Hierarchies Administration > Territories.
  2. In the Territory list, select the new territory.
  3. Select the Crediting Rule view tab, and in the Crediting Rules list, add the crediting rule.

For more information, see Adding a Crediting Rule to a Territory.

  4. In the crediting rule record, select Submitted in the Status field.
  5. After the crediting rule is submitted, click the menu button and choose Validate Record.

In the Crediting Rules list, select the credit rule, and drill down on the hyperlink in the name field to view the rule criteria, value, and allocation details.

The validation verifies the following conditions:

    • The start and end dates are effective within the rule.
    • The position is assignable during the allocation start and end dates.
    • The same position cannot be assigned two different rules at the same time, in the same rule.
  6. Submit and validate the territory that includes the new territory position and crediting rule.

The validation verifies that child territory positions, rules, and rule allocations are validated in the specified sequence. For more information, see Submitting a Territory for Approval.
