About Using Barcode Readers

With data from the barcode reader, you can perform the following types of operations:

  • New. Enter the number from the barcode in a new line (record) in the view. In this mode, a user goes to the view that is to receive a number, then clicks a specific applet. A new record is created, and the appropriate field in this record is populated. For more information, see Creating New Records for Barcode Data (End User).
  • Update. Update the number in a selected line (record) in the view. In this mode, a user goes to the view that is to receive a number, clicks a specific applet, and selects a record. The appropriate field in the selected record is populated. The new number replaces the existing number. For more information, see Updating Records with Barcode Data (End User).
  • Find. Search the Siebel application for the location of the barcode input. In this mode, the incoming barcode finds the location of the barcode input, opens the appropriate view, selects an applet. For more information, see Finding Records with Barcode Readers (End User).

A user can perform the following specific operations:

  • Enter individual barcodes of any acceptable type. The user enters individual barcodes with either the New or Update option.
  • Read multiple barcodes in succession, all of the same type (for example, either asset numbers or repair numbers).

NOTE:  If users create multiple barcodes in succession, then make sure that all required fields in the records, except for the target field for the barcode data, have a default value.
