Embedding a new Language in the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS application
General Notes on the Language Integration
Every language is saved with a unique number in the window Languages. The name of the language is defined there,
too. The correct spelling of this name is to be made sure in various windows,
commands and files (e.g. oscar
dofgl.fgl <Language>).
Attention!
- If changes have been made (translation
of: mask texts, online help etc.), you have to inform the development
department in Berlin. Only by this, you can make sure that the
modifications will be integrated into the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS standard application
and that they will be included in the next release / update.
Up to 99 languages can be embedded in the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS
application. However, please note:
- The number of languages that can be
displayed in the program dispatch is limited and depends on the operating
system and the screen resolution. In UNIX, three languages can be offered
for selection.
- Please consider that every language
integrated in the database via a "dofgl" needs hard drive memory
space (DbText and UiText files will be increased in size accordingly); the
database behaviour will be affected.
The following description outlines the procedure of
embedding new languages. Further and more detailed help can be found in the
chapters:

How to embed a new language in the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS application (Short
Manual)
“To embed a new language in the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS application” means
1. Configuration with a new Number
- The first step is the installation of the
new language with a free number in the window Languages.
The name for the language is defined there, too. The correct spelling of
this name is particularly important with oscar
dofgl.fgl <Language>.
2. Translation of the Menu, Mask Texts etc.
Attention!
As from version Oscar 3.5 the texts for the standard languages
1 = German, 2 = English and 3 = French are no longer together in files
UiText.asc and DbText.asc.
In the standard version the files UiText.asc and DbText.asc only contain
language 2 =English. Languages 1 = German and 3 = French will be provided in
separate files and must be added to the files DbText.asc and UiText.asc before
a new language is embedded or prior to update. Adding another language must be
done with command "oscar addAscFiles". After execution of this
command in directory "..\work" the user must then decide which
additional language is to be added to the English version. At present only the
additional languages German and French are on offer. After the choice has been
made, the commands "oscar init UiText" and "oscar init DbText"
as well as "oscar dofgl.fgl lang" must be executed.
Example language selection:
Selection of languages to MICROS Retail OSCAR POS database.
add further languages to English(UK).
Enter one or more number of the following list.
Enter the number, separate with comma or
type 'a' for all,
blank or nothing, only English (UK) is used.
0) – DE
1) – FR
3. Adoption of the new Texts in the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS application
- The commands oscar init DbText, oscar
init UiText and oscar
dofgl.fgl <Language> allow MICROS Retail OSCAR POS to recognize the texts
and make them " readable". With the "oscar dofgl.fgl
<Language>", the language will be brought to the selection
panel in the program dispatch.
4. Configuration of the Selection Switch for the Language
- With the "oscar dofgl.fgl
<Language>", the selection switches in the program dispatch are
set up. The number of switches can be increased or decreased subsequently,
though. Via the window System -> User Interface -> Form "Dispatch"
-> Choice Fields, the selection switches
can be faded in or out.
5. Display new Online Help
- The help texts are to be translated and
copied to the directory help.<Language> (which is to be
created too). In UNIX, an additional software link has to be created.
- A language which has been embedded in the
system with command "oscar dofgl.fgl Sprache" can
be deleted with the following command:
oscar delfgl.fgl Sprache
