Create Visualizations Based on Linked Datasets
You can use linked datasets to make pivot tables and charts in a workbook. Table views don’t support data aggregation, so you can’t use linked datasets for them.
As with visualizations based on single datasets, you build ones with linked datasets by assigning fields as dimensions and measures in the Layout panel. Any fields set as common keys in the link are marked with a chain link icon in the Dataset panel. For results to render and aggregate right, any fields you use as a dimension should also be set as a common key. If not, you might see blank cells. For more information, see Common Keys.
Also, if you filter a field that’s a common key, make sure you use the same filter on its matching key field. If you don’t, only results from one dataset will be filtered.

To create a visualization based on linked datasets:
-
Click the Add icon from anywhere within the workbook.
-
Select the type of visualization you want to create.
Note:Table Views do not support linked datasets.
-
Drag fields from the Dataset Panel to the Layout Panel. To switch between datasets, click the dataset name
Important:Any fields you assign as dimensions should also be set as common keys in the link. This controls how your results are aggregated and prevents empty cells. For more information, see Common Keys.
-
(Optional) Create a calculated measure using fields from either dataset. For more information, see
-
(Optional) Filter your results. For more information, see Workbook Visualization Filters.
Important:If you want to filter your results with a dataset filter and use a field that’s a common key, be sure to apply the same filter to its matching key in the other dataset. If you don’t, only results from one dataset will be filtered. Plus, any calculated measures you’ve made will only show up at the total and grand total levels.

Click the Refresh icon to generate the results.
