Assigning Item Creation Records to Materials, Additional Items, or Base Items

You can assign an item creation record to a material, an additional item (called a breakout item), or a base item (called a base generic product). When users submit the configuration, NetSuite CPQ Configurator will create a new item to be a material, additional item, or base item, respectively.

In the Audit menu on the user interface, materials and additional items associated with an item creation record are highlighted and their description indicates to users that these items will be created when submitting the configuration.

For more information, see the following help topics:

To assign item creation records, open the product for editing at CPQ > Configurator > Product Maintenance.

Assigning Item Creation Records to Products

When you assign an item creation record to the product, the item to be created will be a base item (called a base generic product). This option is useful when you want each submitted configuration to create a unique main item with its own item name or number.

As a base item, the new item appears as the main item on the transaction after users submit the configuration. For more information about base items, see Assigning Base Items to Products.

To assign an item creation record to a product, go to the product record and select an item creation record in the Base Generic Product (Created) field. When you are finished, save the product record.

Assigning Item Creation Records to Additional Items

If you want to automatically create an additional item (called breakout item), assign an item creation record to an additional item. When users submit the configuration, NetSuite CPQ Configurator will assign a dedicated line on the transaction to the newly created additional item. For more information about additional items, see Including Additional Items Related to the Configurable Item.

To assign an item creation record to an additional item, go to the Items subtab of the product record and open for editing the additional item you want to modify. Select an item creation record in the Item Creation field and save the additional item.

Assigning Item Creation Records to Materials

If you want to create a material for your configuration automatically, assign the item creation record to a material. For more information about materials, see Defining Materials for the Configurable Item.

If users create a work order after submitting the configuration, NetSuite CPQ Configurator adds the newly created material to the work order under the Items subtab. For more information, see Creating Work Orders for Configured Items.

To assign an item creation record to a material, go the Materials subtab of the product record and open for editing the material you want to modify. Select an item creation record from the Item Creation field and save the material.
