16 Servicing the NVMe Cables

The following section describes how to service the NVMe cables. The NVMe cables are field-replaceable units (FRUs). For more information about FRUs, see Illustrated Parts Breakdown and Field-Replaceable Units.

Caution:

The NVMe cables must be removed and replaced only by authorized Oracle Service personnel.

Caution:

Ensure that all power is removed from the server before removing or installing the NVMe cables. You must disconnect the power cables before performing this procedure.

Caution:

These procedures require that you handle components that are sensitive to electrostatic discharge. This sensitivity can cause the component to fail. To avoid damage, ensure that you follow electrostatic discharge safety measures and antistatic practices. See Electrostatic Discharge Safety.

This section covers the following procedures:

Remove NVMe Cables

  1. Prepare the server for service.
    1. Power off the server and disconnect the power cords from the power supplies.
    2. Extend the server to the maintenance position.
    3. Attach an antistatic wrist strap to your wrist, and then to a metal area on the chassis.
    4. Remove the server top cover.
    5. Remove the P0 upper air baffle [1].

Lift the air baffle up and out of the chassis and set it aside.

  2. Disconnect the NVMe A and B cables from the disk backplane by pressing the latch on the cable connector and then pulling out the connector [2].

Figure showing how to remove the NVMe cables.
  3. Disconnect the NVMe A and B cables from the motherboard NVMe connectors [2].

    Note:

(Optional) To ease the disconnecting of cables, you might need to remove the FM0 fan module. See Remove a Fan Module.
  4. Carefully lift the NVMe A cable from the left-side trough and gently pull the NVMe B cable through the center cable trough and remove them from the server [2, 3].

Install NVMe Cables

  1. Carefully install the NVMe A cable into the left-side trough and pull the NVMe B cable through the center cable trough [1, 2].

Figure showing how to install the NVMe cables.
  2. Connect the NVMe A and B cables to the motherboard NVMe connectors [2].

    Note:

An NVMe A cable (part number 7363957) and NVMe B cable (part number 8201504) are required to connect the motherboard NVMe connectors to the disk backplane.

    Note:

Each NVMe cable contains a matching label that corresponds to connectors on the motherboard and the disk backplane. For example, the NVMe cable labeled A, plugs into motherboard NVMe A connector and the disk backplane NVMe A connector.

Use the following table to ensure proper NVMe cable connections.

Motherboard NVMe Connector Disk Backplane Connector Storage Drives

    A

  3. Connect the NVMe cables to the disk backplane [2].

To ensure proper connections, see the NVMe cable connections table in Step 2.

  4. Return the server to operation.
    1. Install the P0 upper air baffle [3].

Position the P0 upper air baffle into the chassis and place it on top of the adjoining P0 lower baffle.

    2. Install the server top cover.
    3. Return the server to the normal rack position.
    4. Reconnect the power cords to the power supplies, and power on the server.
    5. Verify that the System OK status indicator is lit.
