Subscription amounts and billing behavior
Use a subscription’s summary, Invoices, Future payments, and Usage information to understand the values that determine current and future charges and subscription metrics. Billing mode, frequency, dates, quantity, rate, recurring items, usage, and later edits affect when amounts appear and whether QuickStart creates an additional invoice or updates future payments.
Subscription summary amounts
- One-time: The total of one-time subscription lines.
- Recurring: The recurring amount for each billing period.
- Usage: The usage amount entered for the current period.
- This period: The amount to bill for the current billing period.
- Booking: The value booked for the subscription.
For a monthly subscription with a three-month duration and a recurring line of $100, the subscription shows:
- Recurring: 100.00
- This period: $100.00
- Booking: $300.00
For a usage-based subscription, the subscription shows $0.00 until usage is added. After usage is added, the usage amount and current period amount update based on the usage value and rate.
When QuickStart extends the charge schedule for an endless subscription, it creates periods through three years from the current date, or from a future subscription start date when that date is later. It carries forward the latest scheduled rate and applicable quantity. A newly generated usage charge starts with quantity 0 and changes only when usage is recorded. Draft subscriptions are not extended until they are submitted.
Billing modes
Billing mode affects when invoices are created:
- In advance: QuickStart creates the current period invoice when the subscription is submitted. Future payments show the next bill dates and periods.
- In arrears: QuickStart bills after the billing period. This is required for usage-based subscriptions because the usage amount is known after usage is entered.
Canceling an in-arrears subscription removes its future payments. If the subscription contains accumulated unbilled usage, QuickStart creates an invoice for that usage when the subscription is canceled.
