A gear definition is the generic definition of a gear that is registered a single time in the PAF. A gear instance is a version of the gear definition that is customized for or used in a community. Thus, a portal will have a single definition of a gear, but can have several instances of the same gear. Gear instances can be shared among communities. Gear settings that can be changed on a per instance basis are called instance parameters.
