System Units

The following program description deals with:

Remarks on the Program Function

By use of this program you can maintain the basic data of the system units in the system, i.e. insert new records, edit and delete the existing ones. You can also display the data on the screen for enquiry only.

System units are directly assigned to installations.

Before you can work with the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS program, all the different system specific data has to be defined. The setting up of the system data as a rule, carried out by the MICROS Retail support personnel and also any of the modifications to the system configuration afterwards.

For the user, at least one system unit has to be defined for an installation. For each installation in the system, the user has to set up a hierarchical structure, where respective system units such as Master and backup master, and processing units such as server, client and domain programs have to be defined.

Remarks on the Input Fields

This paragraph will provide a short overview over the options available for updating these Basic Data.

Just like in almost any other program:

Installation

Permitted input range: numeric, 1 - 9999

Enter the number of the installation to which the system unit is assigned. The name of the installation will be displayed to the right of the input field. Without this assignment, a system unit cannot be created in the system.

To add a new record, enter an unused number in the Key Fields.

For changes or deletions for an existing installation in the system, retrieve the record by entering values into the marked Key Fields. If you do not know the number, you can also select the data record via the Search Function.

System Unit

Permitted input range: numeric, 1 - 9999

Enter the number of the system unit which is to be assigned to the installation. The assignment of the number is arbitrary. For each processor within the network, a system unit record has to be set up in the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS program.

To add a new record, enter an unused number in the Key Fields.

For changes or deletions for an existing installation in the system, retrieve the record by entering values into the marked Key Fields. If you do not know the number, you can also select the data record via the Search Function.

Designation

Permitted input range: max. 20 characters

When inserting a record, enter the name of the processor (host name) which is assigned to the specified installation. By means of the name of the system unit, the IP address will be determined and displayed on the screen.

Note:
The individual name of the processor can be found by entering the command "hostname -s" under the operating system of the processor. The name of the processor will then be displayed on the screen.

Note:
Please ensure that the name of the system unit
(= processor name) does not begin with numbers, as the system would then try to convert this to an IP no..

The processor name and the correct spelling is ascertained as follows:

For UNIX:
Under operating system UNIX the processor name is displayed after release of command "hostname -s" on the processor concerned.

For WINNT:
Enter command "hostname" when an entry is requested to ensure that the processor name is spelt correctly.

With WINNT the processor name is displayed in capital letters only under Network environment -> Characteristics -> Identification. As the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS application requires the correct spelling (capital and small letters) when entering the processor name, the entry from file "oscar.ini" should be transferred to the "bin" directory of the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS installation.

Further details on any further parameters and environment variables which may be necessary for the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS program can be found under "Initialisation file oscar.ini".

The entry "MICROS Retail OSCAR POS_HOSTNAME=rechnername" is in any case the name with the correct spelling as entered in the registration database during installation.

Further details on general network configuration can be found under:

·        Configuration options for TCP/IP connections in MICROS Retail OSCAR POS

Location

Permitted input range: alphanumeric, max. 32 characters

When creating a new record, enter the location where the system unit/processor is installed. Use eloquent names such as "Headquarters-London", "Branch Office - Berlin", etc. to have a better overview of the respective installation.

Model No.

Permitted input range: alphanumeric, max. 32 characters

Enter the model number of the system unit, e.g. ADS P 133.

Serial No.

Permitted input range: alphanumeric, max. 32 characters

Enter the serial number of the system unit.

Installation Date

Permitted input range: DDMMYYYY (day, month, year)

Enter the installation date of the system unit.

Auto Update

Switch activated: This system unit will be taken into account during the Automatic Software update (ASU 2).
Switch deactivated: This system unit will not be taken into account during the Automatic Software update (ASU 2)..

This option is active per default, this means that all system units of this installation have to be taken into account during the automatic software update.

Note:
From Version MICROS Retail OSCAR POS41 the "Automatic Software Update" (ASU 2) will operate on different criteria.. This will be done automatically due to the Version of MICROS Retail OSCAR POS wher the software update was started.

Click on the graphic for further help with the specific settings for a "Automatic Software Update Version 2 (ASU 2)".
