8.2 Selecting a Server Memory Kit

Any Oracle Private Cloud Appliance may contain more than one generation of server hardware. This depends on when the system was purchased and installed, and whether it has since been extended with additional compute nodes. At the time of the Oracle PCA Software Release 2.2.1, these server hardware generations may be part of your installation:

Table 8.2 Oracle Private Cloud Appliance Server Hardware Generations

Server Hardware

Default Memory Configuration

Sun Server X3-2

Sun Server X4-2

  • 16 DIMMs with 16GB DDR3-1600 RAM

  • total: 256GB RAM

  • free DIMM slots: none

Oracle Server X5-2

  • 8 DIMMs with 32GB DDR4-2133 RAM

  • total: 256GB RAM

  • free DIMM slots: 16

The default memory configuration can be extended for each of these server generations, but the options are different.

  • A Sun Server X3-2 or Sun Server X4-2 may be upgraded by replacing the default 16x 16GB DIMMs with 16x 32GB DDR3-1600 DIMMs. This increases the amount of RAM from 256GB to 512GB.

  • An Oracle Server X5-2 may be upgraded by adding DIMMs in the available slots. Two upgrade kits are available for these servers:

    • 8x 32GB DDR4-2133 DIMMs, increasing the amount of RAM from 256GB to 512GB while leaving 8 more free DIMM slots

    • 16x 32GB DDR4-2133 DIMMs, increasing the amount of RAM from 256GB to 768GB and filling all available DIMM slots
