Online mode is generally preferable for small deployments that require only a single transaction. Switch mode is generally favored for large deployments that involve multiple transactions, where data is activated as each transaction commits. A large online deployment is liable to put a live Web site in an inconsistent state containing both new and stale data; and it can also disrupt performance.
