Setting up a dual path connection consumes twice the SAS targets as a single path connection. The HBA must support the total number of targets in the dual path connection.
For example, an HBA that supports 244 targets (122 per port), can be used in a multipath configuration with up to two J4500 arrays, where:
Two J4500s contain a total of 96 disks.
In a multipath configuration with two arrays, the number of disk targets seen by the HBA is 192.
SAS expanders in the array consume three targets each. There are two expanders per SAS fabric (two for SAS A and two for SAS B).
In a multipath configuration with two arrays, the combined expanders consume 24 targets.
When cascading multiple J4500s using a multipath configuration, Sun recommends cascading the host links in opposite directions from the edge of the SAS fabrics to prevent a single J4500 failure from blocking access to other J4500s in the cascade.
Example Multipath Failover Configuration shows an example of cascading connections. The red arrow indicates the direction of the enclosure cascade, either downstream or upstream (which determines the order in which devices on the SAS link are discovered). The redundant fabrics (SAS A and B) are fully independent; each with access to all of the combined storage. If you zoned the disks so that each host link controls a portion of the storage, additional host links would need to be added to provide path failover for storage in each zone.
