The most common type of rule is a text pattern rule, which consists of a text string written in the syntax of Oracle ATG Web Commerce Search’s text pattern language (see the Understanding Rule Pattern Syntax section of this chapter).

To add a rule pattern to a topic:

  1. On the Search Workbench tab, select Topic Sets from the Show menu.

  2. In the Topic Sets menu, select Topic Sets > Your Topic Set > Your Topic.

  3. Click the Rules tab.

  4. Enter the following information for each rule.

    • Pattern—Text string representing the text pattern used for matching.

    • Weight—Integer value indicating the weight value associated with a match against this pattern. This value may range between -100 and 100.

    • Group—You can optionally assign the rule to one or more comma separated groups, known as Rule Groups. The groups are defined by virtue of being entered into this field. Grouped rules can be enabled or disabled by group name in Text Processing Option sets, allowing rules to be targeted to specific content.

    • Language—Select an option from the languages available for your installation. The default value is either English, or the value selected for the Topic Set as a whole on the Topic Set page. This setting indicates the language in which terms in the pattern are to be interpreted. It also specifies the language of the content against which the pattern should be matched. For example, a pattern that is set to French can only match against content that has been indexed as French. This feature allows a single topic set to categorize documents in several different languages.

Rules are applied in order from top to bottom. Use the arrow buttons to move rules up or down the list.

  5. Click Save to save the rules and remain on this topic, or Save and Edit Next to add a rule to the next topic at this level.

The new rule has the ID “New” until it is saved. ATG Search automatically assigns an ID to the new rule.
