Classic Campaign – Sending a Proof Test

Important: Effective June 2024, Responsys will not support Classic Campaign functionality. After the effective date, Campaign Designer will be the only Responsys tool for creating and sending targeted and personalized campaigns. Learn more about the Campaign Designer.

In this step, you can test your campaign by sending it to your Proof List and/or specific email addresses.

You can use the debugging options to validate that your personalization rules are working as designed. Debugging is used only during Proof Launch and Preview, eliminating the chance that test content is accidentally sent to actual customers.

To select proof test recipients:

Selecting Proof debugging options

Use the debugging options to print your RPL debug code and/or data fields and their values at the end of the test message.

Enable debug mode
Prints your RPL debug code at the end of the email. For information about including debug code in messages, see About Debugging Code.

Output data sources
Displays all data fields and their associated values that were used to personalize the email at the end of the email.

To send only a specific message format:

  • Select the Select specific message formats for proof launch check box and select the formats you want: HTML, Text, and/or Multipart (HTML/Text).

To schedule the Proof Launch:

Select one of the following options:

  • Immediately—launches the proof test immediately after you confirm the launch information.
  • Once—launches the proof test once on a specific date at a specific time.
  • Recurring Launch—launches the proof test at a specific interval (hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly). Within each interval, you can select options to precisely fit your requirements, for example, every three hours, every Wednesday, or on a specific day of each month. In addition, you can select the start and end dates for the campaign, or let the campaign run indefinitely.

To Select Launch Preferences

In the Settings section, select any of the following options:

  • Limit launch records to how many?—sends a limited number of messages. By default, the launch is limited to 5 messages. To send a different number of messages, enter the number you want. If you do not want to limit the number of messages, clear this checkbox.
  • How many to sample?—sends messages to a random sample of recipients from the list. The number to sample specifies the number of records to select. In addition, you can specify the following:
  • Total number to sample from?—the number of records to select from.
  • Total number to start with?—the record from which to start sending sample emails.

For example: You sample 1 record from 3, starting with record 2. This will select 1 record from every 3, and send to those records, starting after record 2.

  • Who do you want to send progress alerts to?—sends a progress notification to one or more email addresses. Separate multiple addresses with either commas or semicolons (;). For processed messages, you can send the notification after the specified number of messages is sent, or when the launch is complete. For sent messages, you can send the notification after the specified percentage of messages is sent, or when the launch is complete. For skipped messages, you can send the notification when a specific percentage of messages is skipped.
  • If launch fails who do you want to notify?—sends email notifications to specified addresses if the launch fails for any reason. The email notification contains information that identifies the campaign and program, and a pointer to the error in the Campaign Dashboard.
  • Failure reasons might include the following:
    • No Response from any of Number mail transfer agents (MTAs)
    • No Response from any of Number MTAs (and SMTP Server Busy on Failover)
    • SMTP Error
    • SMTP Error (and SMTP Server Busy on Failover)
