Install Shelf Rails and Back Mounting Brackets

  1. Ensure that your rack meets the requirements in Rack Compatibility.
  2. Determine the server location in the rack.

The server requires five rack units, and should go directly above the unit below it with no gaps.

  3. Install the two spacers in back rack rails.

Studs on the spacers fit into the oval holes on the inside of the back rack rail. Align the bottom of the spacer with the bottom of the system rack space.

  4. Use the alignment template to install cage nuts.
    1. Align the template with the holes where you intend to place the server.

The template has rack alignment images on either side; one for the back rack alignment [1], and one for the front rack alignment [2].

image:Figure of template being used to locate cage nuts.
    2. Place the cage nuts in the locations indicated by the alignment template.

Place the cage nuts on the inner-facing side of each rail. There are two cage nuts in each front rail and three cage nuts in each back rail.

Note -  The front of the server has four screws per side. When you place the server in the rack, the top two screws attach to the cage nuts that you install in the rack rails. The bottom will pass through the holes in the rack and fasten to the shelf rails.

To use the cage nut insertion tool, see Use the Cage Nut Insertion Tool.

  5. Install the left and right shelf rails.

The rails are labeled left and right, front and back.

The rails have studs and a latch at each end. For each rail:

    1. Expand the shelf rail to fit the rack.
    2. Insert the studs [1] into the holes on the rack, and then press the front tab [2] and back tab [3] to open the latch and fasten the shelf rail to the rack.

  6. Attach the back mounting brackets.
    1. Align each bracket so that the flanges go over the top of the server.
    2. Use two screws to fasten each bracket to the rack.

Do not tighten the screws all the way. Do that later in the procedure: Install the Server Into the Rack.
