ATG Search runs within a standard ATG platform installation. Due to the heavy performance demands of indexing content and serving search responses, you may want dedicate at least one machine in your network exclusively to Search. If you have multiple machines dedicated to searching, only one should run the full Search Administration installation and be used for indexing content.

Other machines you want to use as part of Search should also have Search installed, but should run the standalone Search engine as described in the ATG Search Installation and Configuration Guide. You can use these machines to support additional Search environments, to a maximum of one search engine per CPU.

All Search installations must have access to the directory on the indexing machine where the indexes are created. They must also all have access to the databases used by Search. See the ATG Search Installation and Configuration Guide for detailed installation requirements and suggested system architecture.
