Macros allow complex and/or frequently used text pattern strings to be defined and referenced by a simple name in a pattern rule. A macro named myMacro can be referenced in a text pattern by the string $myMacro. The macro is expanded within the text pattern to its defining string.
Macros can be defined at the topic level or the global level.
