Building the index turns your Search project’s content into searchable data, associates all of the relevant customizations, and makes it available for searching.
More than one index can be built at the same time, if enough servers are available. The indexes must be for different Search projects. When indexing is complete, the resulting indexes can be automatically copied to production or staging search environments.
