Prepare a CMIOU for Removal

This procedure can be performed by a customer while the server is running.

Replace a CMIOU when the replacement CMIOU is available.

Complete the following steps before you unseat or remove a CMIOU.

Caution

Caution  -  This procedure requires that you handle components that are sensitive to electrostatic discharge. This discharge can cause server components to fail. When you unpack the replacement part, open the package on a grounded antistatic mat. Always use an antistatic wrist strap for hardware replacements.

Note -  The CMIOU replacement kit includes a plastic cover to protect the CMIOU connectors. When you unpack the new CMIOU, be sure to set the connector cover aside. You must install this cover on the CMIOU that you return to Oracle.
  1. Determine which CMIOU requires service.

    See Identify Faulted Components and CMIOU Indicators and LEDs.

  2. Determine whether the CMIOU is powered off.
    -> show /System/DCUs/DCU_x/CMIOU_y power_state
  3. Determine your next step.
    • If the CMIOU is running (power_state=on), go to Step 4.

    • If the CMIOU is not running (power_state=off), go to Step 8.

  4. Determine to which PDomain the CMIOU is assigned.
    -> show /System/DCUs/DCU_x host_assigned
    /System/DCUs/DCU_x
    Properties:
    host_assigned = HOSTx
  5. Access the host console.

    Connect to the host console in a separate terminal session before stopping the host to ensure that you can view all messages reported by the system.

    -> start /Servers/PDomains/PDomain_x/HOST/console
    Are you sure you want to start
    /Servers/PDomains/PDomain_x/HOST/console (y/n) ? y
    Starting /Servers/PDomains/PDomain_x/HOST/console
    ...
    ->
  6. Stop the host.

    Stop the host to which the CMIOU is assigned.

    -> stop /Servers/PDomains/PDomain_x/HOST
    Are you sure you want to stop /Servers/PDomains/PDomain_x/HOST/(y/n)? y
    Stopping /Servers/PDomains/PDomain_x/HOST/
    ->
  7. Confirm that the host has stopped.
    -> show /Servers/PDomains/PDomain_x/HOST status

    /Servers/PDomains/PDomain_x/HOST
       Properties:
       status = Powered Off
    ->
  8. Prepare the installed CMIOU for removal.
    -> set /System/DCUs/DCU_x/CMIOU_y action=prepare_to_remove

    where:

    • SPARC M8-8 or SPARC M7-8 (with two PDomains): x is 0 and y is 0–3, or x is 1 and y is 4–7

    • SPARC M8-8 or SPARC M7-8 (with one PDomain): x is 0 and y is 0–7

    • SPARC M7-16: x is 0-3 and y is 0–15

    Note -  If you issue the prepare_to_remove command, but decide not to remove the CMIOU, you must return the component to service. To do this, either issue the return_to_service command or physically remove the CMIOU from the server and reinstall it.
  9. Verify that the CMIOU is ready to remove.
    -> show /System/DCUs/DCU_x/CMIOU_y health

    When the CMIOU is ready to remove, this command returns Offline, and the blue Ready to Remove LED lights.

  10. Unpack the new CMIOU and place it on a grounded antistatic mat.

    See Prevent ESD Damage.

    Note -  A CMIOU is heavy. A fully-loaded SPARC M7 CMIOU weighs 25 lbs (11.3 kg) and a fully-loaded SPARC M8 CMIOU weighs 27 lbs (12.2 kg). Use two hands when handling a CMIOU, and do not handle it by the ejectors or connectors.
  11. After you have removed it from the system, remove the plastic connector cover from the connectors on the new CMIOU and set it aside for installation on the old CMIOU connectors.
